The Celtics would like to stay below the estimated luxury tax threshold of $70 million if possible -- that is true next year as well as in 2010-11 -- which places limits on their ability to spend. (Tony Massarotti, BostonGlobe May 19)

Why $80 million? Because The Celtics are currently at $72 Million and in order for the team to win it all they need to fill some holes and spend.

1) Consolidate the contracts of Scal, House and TA to create an $8.5 million dollar expiring and bring in one player of value making that amount. (kaman or camby? hell, if a future first rounder needs to be included do it)

2) Sign a player to the full MLE. enough of this splitting it up crap. ($5.5 million for Moon? McDyess? Wallace? Korver?)

3) Resign Baby or match and Trade. (this could cost up to 5 million)

4) Fill out the roster will with LLE veterans (Marbury?  Magloire? Maybe Scal and House after buyouts?)

The time is now for the Celtics to go "all in" Mark Cuban style. GIVE DANNY THE GREEN LIGHT!

I agree with you.   You don't mortgage the future for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, knowing that they have a small window for opportunity and not maximize.  Besides, they're guaranteed 41 sellouts plus at least 7 home playoff games.  No reason not to.

except that an 80 million payroll costs the ownership around 100-120 (not sure when it converts to 3/1) mill once you count in the tax. The NBA does well, but im not sure it does that well in this town, thats approching MLB payroll money.

I have no problem with Wyc trying to keep the personal costs below the 100 million mark, we just need to make smarter personal decisions this year, less projects and more proven guys.

The amount does not matter.  They just need to be spending it more wisely this season.

I agree. No reason to be gunshy if you're a championship caliber team. Go and sign McDyess or Sheed first and foremost. See who we can buy in the draft, if we can't get Baby to come back, aim for Dejuan Blair who is an absolute beast. Then see if we can get a wing like Anthony Parker to sign on, and I say we'd be as built as anyone for another championship run.

To a certain extent. I do think the overall amount matters. Will they let us resign Davis and spend the MLE? That would give us a lot more possibilities.

Either way I think we can reload for another great title run if Danny plays the Celtics cards right.

Grant Hill Grant Hill Grant Hill. The guy's a great fit and has proven he's willing to play for reasonable money.

Eh he's getting very very old. I think he'd have value but I'd rather have someone with a bit more left in the tank.

Still he'd fill our huge gaping hole at backup SF admirably.

He has enough in the tank for next season.

He also has enough ability to rub the offense when House is playing the PG position.

Great point about having him as a point forward.  I think he would be an ideal addition.  I don't think the C's would be able to get him to come here though.  I have always taken him as a guy who enjoys the warm weather, and would prefer to spend his last few years playing on teams in warm weather cities.

If I'm Wyc, who is extremely rich, I don't see the harm in spending ten to fifteen million more for next season. It is in all likelihood the Celtics last chance at the title. I can understand the stinginess that came with the last off-season; many people, including myself, thought we were still the best team, and we would have been champs if we were not decimated by injuries. But we now need a complete over-haul. The time for Wyc to open up the bank is now. He needs to give Danny the green light: We need to trade Scal and Ta, we need to sign Baby, we need to try and buy a first rounder, and we need to use the MLE on an impact player. The ball is in Wyc's court. What is he going to do?

Hopefully he likes Doc enough from their days in Orlando

I love when people act like Wyc is john henry, and prints money in a back room somewhere because its a boston sports team, and can just toss 15-20 million around like its nothing. also, because of the tax, spending "10-15 million" is really "20-30 million"

Again, This is not the boston redsox with thier amazing finacial success and fan base. We have a dedicated fan base, but i severaly doubt the celtics can just laugh off a 110-120 million dollar payroll expense as some are suggesting.

And "now is the time to open up the pocket book?" we have the third highest payroll in the league. We will undoubtaly have a top 3, if not the first, again next year.

People are so spolied by the red sox ownership group. For most "extremly rich" people, 15-20 million dollars is still alot to ask to put into something that doesn't really make them that much of a return compared to thier actual buisness ventures.

BUT, as me and WDL have said, It's not the payroll thats important, its who we spend the money on. 75 Mill should be more than enough, with the vetrans avaiable this year, to put together a heck of a bench.
