restricted free agents are very hard to acquire, and we can't really outbid anyone, so not much hope there.
Trades:
couple avenues here:
-trade one of our small expiring deals for a small long term deal. Unlikely, as any useful players on cheap contracts aren't likely to be traded for scal or tony, and we don't really have any worthwhile draftpicks to sweeten a deal
-sign and trade with BBD. Can't really predict anything here as i can't really gauge league interest for him
-trade ray. separate forum topic eventually
-package as many expiring deals as we can to bring back a useful overpaid player from a team looking to dump long term money. I'll explore this here:
1st step: pray that eddie picks up his option, as that instantly becomes a 2.5 or so million dollar expiring deal.
Then, we can package Scal, Pruitt, House, Allen, Giddens, and Walker to bring back a player making up to 13.9 million dollars next year. More if we can include Davis in a sign and trade. I have no real problem with this, as it is unlikely that Walker or giddens will amount to much (believe me, i have hopes but it is unlikely), Allen and scal are not that good, pruitt's shown nothing, and eddie, while valuable, isn't a dealbreaker in the right deal.
So, what players make 13.9 or less and play for teams that would trade them away to have expiring and cuttable contracts? (it needs to be a pure money move becasue trading 6 for 1 means the team would need to cut some of them).
Possibilities, depending on team finances (some very unlikely):
Gerald wallace
boris diaw
okafor
hinrich
deng
dampier
terry
nene
ellis
crawford
biedrins
steph jackson
maggette
troy murphy
Kaman
baron
bogut
big al
dalembert
jason richardson
nocioni
jameson
caron butler
those are the bigger names. some intriguing, some impossible, that i put on there for fun (big al) there are a lot of smaller contracts (like kapono, for instance) that i didn't bother with. so from the above list, who would truly be available and could help our team more that the above package of players? i could see:
-Butler, but more likely Jameson, if the Wiz get a high pick and are up against the tax and need to clear room to afford to keep griffin or rubio or someone.
-nocioni, not really necessarily in the rebuilding plans of a small market possibly moving team
-jason richardson. save some money now, a bunch later to afford amare long-term (esp. when shaq comes off the books as well)
-Diaw or G Wallace. long term contracts, low attendence team. obviously prefer wallace.
-Dalembert or Kaman. Redundant to their teams; teams have big money committed elsewhere.
-Crawford. nelson asked him to opt out, clearly doesn't want him
-stephen jackson. overpaid, lots of big contracts on that not so good team
-Maggette. they've tried to dump him already.
the nice thing about golden state is that if they are desperate enough to save money, we could possibly pry away a guy like wright or randolph, athletic talent that nelson just didn't trust. As further aside, i like going after golden state as i think nelson is one who can be duped because he is impulsive and just seems to irrationally hate players sometimes.
So, thoughts?
