Money is one thing but if you're correct and all Dumars wants is cap room, then he'll get picks along with it. What about Kurt Thomas, Bruce Bowen and George Hill for Prince? That works and that saves them exactly as much money, and they get a viable PG in the process. They will get back talent or picks or both for either Hamilton or Prince, assuming he moves either guy.

Ok, so maybe you have to include a pick as well. My point is it's very possible for the Celtics to make such a deal.

I disagree, unless they want ray allen, and rip aint worth ray allen. If they want to move those two, a ton of teams will happily offer them better than 2 scrubs, one shooter and a second round pick.

What picks are you throwing in? our 2nd? we dont even have a first.

and scal, Ta, and house are not something detroit looks at and goes "wow!"

The expiring deals and ability for Dumars to cheaply fill out his roster (only 8 players under contract) are enticing. A near future 1st rounder would be incentive enough for the Celtics, although possibly not necessary.

for 7 million in expiring contracts he doesn't need (they have a max offer already as they are) he's gifting us rip hamilton?

I just don't see why detroit gives us the time of day.

UFAs worth a look (some will be too expensive):
Wilcox
McDyess
Sheed
Barnes
g hill
Gooden
Marion
anthony parker
andre miller
Carney
Sheldon Williams
ariza
nesterovic
artest
wafer
brandon bass
joe smith
ben gordon
zaza
chris andersen
udoka

restricted free agents are very hard to acquire, and we can't really outbid anyone, so not much hope there.

Trades:
couple avenues here:
-trade one of our small expiring deals for a small long term deal. Unlikely, as any useful players on cheap contracts aren't likely to be traded for scal or tony, and we don't really have any worthwhile draftpicks to sweeten a deal
-sign and trade with BBD. Can't really predict anything here as i can't really gauge league interest for him
-trade ray. separate forum topic eventually
-package as many expiring deals as we can to bring back a useful overpaid player from a team looking to dump long term money. I'll explore this here:

1st step: pray that eddie picks up his option, as that instantly becomes a 2.5 or so million dollar expiring deal.

Then, we can package Scal, Pruitt, House, Allen, Giddens, and Walker to bring back a player making up to 13.9 million dollars next year. More if we can include Davis in a sign and trade. I have no real problem with this, as it is unlikely that Walker or giddens will amount to much (believe me, i have hopes but it is unlikely), Allen and scal are not that good, pruitt's shown nothing, and eddie, while valuable, isn't a dealbreaker in the right deal.

So, what players make 13.9 or less and play for teams that would trade them away to have expiring and cuttable contracts? (it needs to be a pure money move becasue trading 6 for 1 means the team would need to cut some of them).
Possibilities, depending on team finances (some very unlikely):

Gerald wallace
boris diaw
okafor
hinrich
deng
dampier
terry
nene
ellis
crawford
biedrins
steph jackson
maggette
troy murphy
Kaman
baron
bogut
big al
dalembert
jason richardson
nocioni
jameson
caron butler

those are the bigger names. some intriguing, some impossible, that i put on there for fun (big al) there are a lot of smaller contracts (like kapono, for instance) that i didn't bother with. so from the above list, who would truly be available and could help our team more that the above package of players? i could see:

-Butler, but more likely Jameson, if the Wiz get a high pick and are up against the tax and need to clear room to afford to keep griffin or rubio or someone.
-nocioni, not really necessarily in the rebuilding plans of a small market possibly moving team
-jason richardson. save some money now, a bunch later to afford amare long-term (esp. when shaq comes off the books as well)
-Diaw or G Wallace. long term contracts, low attendence team. obviously prefer wallace.
-Dalembert or Kaman. Redundant to their teams; teams have big money committed elsewhere.
-Crawford. nelson asked him to opt out, clearly doesn't want him
-stephen jackson. overpaid, lots of big contracts on that not so good team
-Maggette. they've tried to dump him already.
the nice thing about golden state is that if they are desperate enough to save money, we could possibly pry away a guy like wright or randolph, athletic talent that nelson just didn't trust. As  further aside, i like going after golden state as i think nelson is one who can be duped because he is impulsive and just seems to irrationally hate players sometimes.

So, thoughts?

The Pistons owe Our Danny big time.

Ainge not only helped midwife the deal that enabled Detroit to land Rasheed Wallace, he also took on backup point guard Chucky Atkins, giving the Pistons the financial flexibility the team needs to re-sign Mehmet Okur next summer. Oh, and just for good measure, Ainge also threw in Mike James, who, lest we forget, was the only Celtic not named Paul Pierce to have started every game this season.

A few hours before yesterday's big, three-team, multiplayer deal involving Detroit, Atlanta, and the Celtics, there was concern among the Pistons that their pursuit of Wallace would be fruitless. Simply, they needed a third team to get involved because the Hawks ...

Lol...well I mean thats not exactly grounds for a full on fleecing of Scal, Tony and House (was it house?) for a guy that rates top 15 at his position

Woh woh woh... wait a second. don't say it like that. I'm not trying to make a connection here other than this: It's wrong to say "well there in the same conference that can't happen" when it does happen. Detroit and Boston are headed in different directions right now.

It does happen but playoff teams don't trade stars to other playoff teams they're gonna face.

I mean its not like WE sent them Rasheed. A 18-36 Hawks team sent a player that had played 1 game to the Pistons. We helped. I mean, its like apples and oranges. I will try to think the last time a playoff team sent an elite level player within their own conference to another playoff team.

First of all, I would like to see Ben Gordon playing for the C's, but I think we'll have a problem with his contract, he's gonna probably ask too much for us to afford...

Secondly, am I the only man on earth who thinks that Flip Murray would be a good replacement of Tony Allen in the roster?? ???

I think Pistons should dump Tayshaun Prince (grossly overpaid) and should consider dumping Rip Hamilton ... but I can't see them dumping either one. Joe Dumars is trying for a quick turn around, to add a few high caliber pieces around his top perimeter players, and get back contending for titles right away.

Dumars is not looking for a full blown rebuilding process. He's retooling on the run.

I also think he'll keep Stuckey at the point, but use him as a two guard with the second unit alongside Bynum.

On another note, I think Gortat is an unrealistic target and I will mad to high heaven if he accepts a backup position next season. I rate him as a top 15 center in the NBA and think it would terrible for his career not to get a starting spot next season.

If Gortat decides to remain a backup, I think he stays in Orlando. I can't see Boston being able to get him.

I think they are a playoff team.

they are a contender if they hit on their max contract this summer. If they get boozer, then i think they can make a case. IF they strike out, then they are screwed till 2010.

They might be more open to trading rip and prince once they see if Utah will match on boozer.

Even with Boozer they finish 8 - 10 in the east IMO.

if we could get rasheed wallace and ben gordan somehow that be insane. they would have to take less money.  i can see wallace taking less money but i dont think gordan will. how do we do this?

let big baby go and sign powe for cheap.

sign marbury for cheap.

trade the package of house t.a and scal for anything that frees up cap space. (fill in anyone you think we could get) pierce backup would be nice.

rondo/marbury/pruitt
ray/gordan/giddens
pierce/SF from the trade/walker
KG/powe
Perk/sheed
Pick 2 Heat:
Pg: Jennings/Vasquez
Sg: Wade/R. Allen/Rivers
SF: Lebron/M. Williams
PF: Bosh/Humphries
C: B. Lopez/Dalembert/Anthony

Well, I mean..they were in the playoffs this season so yeah,

They're one of the teams in a position to do whatever they want. They could offer a max deal this season, or they could just pocket it, wait a year, finish between 7-10 in the east and try for one of the really big names.

With Boozer though they are better than a 8-10 place. Boozer is a heck of a talent, and lets not underestimate how good these guys have the potential to be, and how envirogating a fresh season can be. They're on par with Philly at the least.

I'd love to see Joe Dumars wait out the season. Unfortunately, I don't think he has the mental fortitude to sit through another poor season when he has the opportunity to improve the team.

I think it's a given that Joe D tries to piece together his team this offseason.
