Does he really have to start taking rebounds away from Perkins? There were a couple times in Game 2 where he clearly stole a rebound that should have been the big man's and a couple of those times, that caused a bobble with the ball. Didn't happen this game but fighting over rebounds is the type of thing that leads to turnovers.
Note: I found myself hoping Rondo would steal even more rebounds from Perkins just to get to the averaging a triple double for the playoffs, so I'm still all for it.
I think the Original Poster made an accurate observation, but perhaps he misread the situation.
Rondo frequently takes rebounds away from his teamates in the frontcourt (Except Garnett, nobody is crazy enough to try that). He also tells his teamates to shoot after he gives them a pass. In both situations, one could interpret Rondo attempting to pad his stats. He is very bright, and will be up for a new contract soon - a few tripple-doubles in the playoffs will not hurt his case.
Rondo is a bull-dog defender, and he is not shy about rewarding a big-man for running the court. He passes up lay ups for open threes almost to often. He is not a cherry picker. For these reasons, I interpret his propensity for taking rebounds and telling his teamates to shoot as unselfish. He is trying to put his teamates in a position to win.
The original poster made a keen observation, and if some of you were watching as closely, you would have seen the same thing.
