I made a post at the start of the season titled " Rolls Royce with bicycle tires on it"; the team went out and bought a Rolls Royce ( KG, Pierce and Ray), the first year they put Rolls Royce tires on it with Posey and got lucky with PJ and Cassell. The second season they put Bicycle tires on the Rolls and expected the same ride...ain't gonna happen.
Because you are such a target after winning a championship and even moreso because our team is older, you need to front load your team on the bench not deplete it.
Going into a repeat campaign with three aging superstars it is very negligent, from a basktball perspective to:
1. Have no back up center( POB is unproven and Baby and powe are PF's )
2. No back up small forward ( Scal is too slow, TA too small, both too inconcistent )
3. No back up off guard ( TA is too inconsistent and can't shoot, JR too young )
4. No back up point guard ( House is an off guard that's too short, Pruitt too young )
So outside of PF, you have four positions being backed up by players playign out of position or buy players who are unproven, too young or too inconsistent.
Nice...
You get what you pay for. And yes, we had a great season, a few games back of last year but we're doing it on razor thin legs and unless KG comes back 75-80% I say our chances of winning another ring are slim to none. With such a short window to win rings, why wouldn't you front load your team every year. Won't you make back that extra $10-15 million in playoff revenue, merchandising, etc...
I wasn't teribly upset with losing Posey, but we should have made some moves for just competent back up players. Quintin Ross / Matt Barnes / Mo Pete or whaoever.
As far as Birdman, I wanted that one badly. From the articles I read he seemed like he rally got it back together. And I loved the passion he played with. I thought he and Kevin would've been off the hook together.
Bottom line, horrible off season. Hopefully they've learned their lesson. and if they're not going to front load the team next season. Start trading these guys now.
Better than watching the torture that is: playing them into the ground like back with the 80's Celtics because they have no bench.
Is there anything worse in sports than watching the best of the best being ground down by lesser talent because they have been given no help. Stand them up there like a punching bag? Send them somewhere where the team is interested in supporting them the right way with a bench that's half decent.
