  • And the Truth shall set you free

I was in LA for Game 5 (when Kobe stole the ball from Pierce and dunked it to end it).  I felt like I was at a preseason game.  I've also been to Miami (when they were still champions) and that crowd cheered for one reason: Any semblance of a good Dwayne Wade play.

I also went to NY this season when the Celtics beat them the day after they lost to LA at home, and while I reluctantly admit that they were a good, loud crowd, they still weren't as good as Boston.  And I was sitting 4 rows from the court!

No doubt game 5 in 2002 was unreal, but keep in mind, that was a comeback for the ages.  I hope you also remember that for three quarters of that game the crowd was very quiet and anxious.

First of all, you are comparing our crowd to the LA, NY, and MIA crowds.  No one has ever said the LA crowd was anything but crappy.  They have the same problem as we do getting the real fans priced out, only its compounded because celebs are taking those spots and they cant ever get rowdy.  Miami is a beach and party town.  they don't really care about sports. And NY has one of the worst teams in the league, of course they shouldn't be as loud as the fans of a team that just won the Championship.

Secondly the crowd had all the right to be quiet in the comeback game, they were getting blown out the whole game.  But even then there was just a lot of noise and a continuous buzz in the building.  And it wasn't just that game about 2002, EVERY game was crazy, that one just hit a new level.

Well I'm going to the game tonight! The sad thing is that while I am a loud person in general, I'm not loud with my dad. =( I'm going to the game with my dad, and for some reason I've always acted differently around my dad (like I don't act crazy and loud).

It'll still be fun, but I don't think I'll be adding anything to the crowd unfortunately.

On topic - yes, it is not as loud as 2002, or anywhere near as loud as the old Garden.  People haven't figured out how to exploit the building to make noise.  I was beating on my seat in the bleachers at game 2 of this series to make extra noise, and all the people around me looked at me like it was such a new and novel idea...none of them joined in, by the way.  I think that many people think of themselves as spectators, rather than as being a necessary part of the experience.

I did that same thing last year during the finals, and I had a guy stare at me and ask me if i had a problem.  I wasn't even banging on his chair.  Back in 2002 EVERYONE was doing it and the noise level was incredible.  I remember leaving everyone of those game (in 2003 too) with a ringing in my ear.  That never happened last year, not even in the finals.

Hey maybe your dad will get into tonight and you'll both go crazy.  You never know... At the very least, don't be one of those guys that tells people to sit down or shut up.  Pump you dad up before hand too, lol

Oh I'm never that person. I love when the crowd gets loud. I just can't add to it when my dad or family is around in general haha. Some kinda mindblock.

I would absolutely love to get the chair banging sound going around in the whole arena. I remember stuff like that happening 6 years ago, but it doesn't anymore.

i was there at the greatest comeback in playoff history, and have never been to another game quite like that in terms of intensity. the crowds then were a little younger and edgier, and it was sheer craziness, sitting in the last row, and thumping my seat against the wall with the back of my foot. (who remembers the $10 playoff strips?). Was there on tuesday, and thought the crowd was oddly quiet in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but it was right there in overtime. I'm going to go down and try to find tix tonight -- fingers crossed.

If you need something to pump you up and p---  you off.  They are replaying the ends of all the games on NBA TV.  Watching this again just reminds me how much I hate Miller, Noah, Thomas, and Gordon.
I am in Texas now, so not going to the game.  But I have a group of freinds that are Celtic fans, some from Boston and others converted.  We will be taking over a local sports bar starting early.  If I was back in Boston even if I didn't have tickets I would be at a bar near the Garden, it is going to be a night to remember.

I may not be at the actual party, but I sure plan on creating one here in Houston.

TP for you... you and your friends are the kind of fans we need in the Garden

Add another one to that sentiment.  I hate all that stuff.  I'm probably an anomaly here, but I am only a Celtics fan.  Born and raised in Boston but never had an interest in the Sox, Pats, or Bruins.

Was at the magic Game last night, and I just have to say...there were a LOT of people there who make more noise screaming for a T shirt than screaming for the team.  Yes, it got noisy in the last few minutes, but it was never overwhelmingly loud (except at one point in the last three minutes where the "de-fense" chants got loud enough to drown out the piped in thumps from the jumbotron).  A second round playoff game should be so loud you can't hear yourself even when you're cheering as loud as you can....

I tried real hard to get a "You're not Perkins (clap clap clap-clap-clap)" chant going whenever Dwight got to the free throw line, but couldn't get more than a few rows to join in...and some of the officiating made me *WANT* to start a "Who's your bookie" chant, but I figured I'd let it be...
Good food, like good music and good love, always requires a little sweat in the making in order for it to be truly memorable.

its tough to maintain a loud, chaotic atmosphere when ur down by 28 point at one point and playing crappy for most of the game

That's a valid point.  But it was quiet from the start.  Maybe a fired up crowd would have helped pull them out of their flat start (the first quarter was mostly even, it didn't get out of hand until the second).  Besides, when they're down is when they need the crowd the most.
