I like Scoop, but a guy who is maybe the 6th or 7th best player of all time and not even the best at his position doesn't deserve that. It's absurd

......Seriously?

There is nothing that will stop me from not going to this event. Can't wait.

  That's almost a triple negative...

Inpressive -- the all-elusive triple negative.  I am still trying to figure out if this means he's going.  I think he is trying to tell us that he can't wait to not go.

....What, seriously?  Who is a better Sg than Jordan all time? Saying he is only 6th or 7th best is one thing but to say there is a better Sg than him is crazy IMO.

Probably not serious, but if it is, it just goes to illustrate the beauty of the human condition -- that 999 people can view a blade of grass and conclude that they see a blade of grass, while the thousandth person swears he is gazing upon a plate of sweet and sour shrimp.

Having an opinion that differs from normal thought can be a very valuable trait.

But when the only reason you have that opinion is because it differs from normal thought, you don't have a real opinion.

Yes seriously. Do you actually think that if Jordan's Bulls had played in the 80s with the bad boy Pistons, Dr. J's Sixers, Bird's Celts, and showtime Lakers that they would have won more than one whole championship or possibly 2?

He's the best player of the ESPN era...so far.

I am considering him a swing man more than a sg and sort of a 6ft 6ish guy. I'm not looking at Oscar Robertson as a pg for example, but I am looking at Magic as a point.

Big O averaged a triple double for a year. Lebron's stats are already better. Duncan may end up beating Jordan's 6 rings. Russell has half again as many rings as Jordan. I also think Magic was better and could do more things. And none of these guys were headcase maddonas that took two years off to play baseball.

But having an opinion that's normal only because it is normal is also not having one

Jordan was an incredible player without a doubt.  But no way does he stand above russell, wilt, bird, oscar robertson, magic, kareem, akeem etc so much that he should go in himself.  The greatest player in a team sport ever was pele or wayne gretzky...did they have such an honor.  So much of jordan is hyped by tv.  Guy carried the ball NEARLY EVERY time he dribbled.

Scoop thinks, "I'd sure like to up my page views for when contract time comes around.  Better say something dumb ASAP."  I can't stand the portion of the sports (or political) world that thrives on making ridiculous statements to get attention, and  Scoop's the biggest one on ESPN.com, which is saying something.

This is the kind of thing that sort of drives me nuts about Jordan. The espn generation of writers that made a career on him have gotten so used to worshipping and hyping the man that his legend is way out of proportion to what he was. I'd even go so far as to say maybe he was the most talented player ever or best scorer, but no way am I calling him the best player. He might be a candidate, but that is IT. Some day someone will tell their kid Jordan was so great that well known sports writers suggested that he should go into the HOF by himself, and they won't really know that he wasn't as good as that. When ESPN named him the best athlete of the century it was a farce. I'd pick Secretariat over him if I didn't think the animal was on steroids. They skipped over people that were multi-sport stars in favor of a guy that fell on his face in baseball.

I think at some point, there is no a SINGLE best player ever.  After a certain level, the only thing you can do is really get into a pool of the best ever.  It's kind of like a hot chick.  A chick can only be so hot, but after a certain level of hotness, she ends up being in a pool of these incredibly hot girls.  You can't really say an incredibly hot girl is hotter than another incredibly hot girl because they are both so incredibly hot.  Jordan was the best player I have ever seen, but you can't really say that he is the clear cut best player ever because there are so many other guys out there that were so incredibly good.

Also, this just proves how dumb and idiotic Scoop's argument was.  Here we have people that completely disagree.  Whether you think he was the best ever, or you are like the guy who mentioned something about him being the 6th best, there will always be a clear difference of opinion.  So who's opinion, or criteria, should we use to define that he is the best ever therefore getting his own HOF?  Scoop Jackson?

I agree about the Jordan thing, but not the hot chick thing

Excellent, fwf - the perfect segway into my favorite quote from the fine fellas at the now-defunct Fire Joe Morgan:

Quote
A note to Baylessian contrarians: you should take no joy in being so wrong about something that throngs of people rise up as one to denounce you. This should not be what it means to be a writer. When thousands of people write you angry emails about something you said or wrote that was wrong, you should not shrug your shoulders and say, "I must be doing something right if I got so many people interested!" No, sir. Sir, no. You were wrong. That is the end of the story. You were so wrong you made people angry. There is no glory in your profound wrongitude. Please stop doing this.

I don't think his point is very valid. Having John Stockton and David Robinson in there with him doesn't detract from his status.
I think it'll detract from the attention and respect Stockton and Robinson are due. It's pity they had to enter the hall alongside Jordan. They deserve more attention than they're going to get.
