Therefore, I think I would choose to keep Thibodeau. The players seem to really like him, and I think he would do well as a head coach if given the shot.

Exactly, you think he would do well.

We have no proof he would do well.  And we have absolutely no proof he could handle players the way Doc does.

If we kept Thibodeau is HC, bringing in low risk / high reward players like Stephon Marbury probably wouldn't be an option.

As valuable as Thibodeau has been, you really shouldn't even consider replacing him with Doc, who is one year removed from coaching a championship team, and may well be on the way to coaching two straight.

No way in hell.  Not even an option IMO.  The backfire would be too great, although I do understand where you're coming from in your thinking.

I think some people completely misunderstand the point of the thread. It is hypothetical, I'm not asking to choose between the two or pick which guy you like more. It's a matter of which situation would you feel more comfortable with if one is going to happen. Obviously everybody(or at least most) would like to keep them both, but which would you rather keep if one was going to leave?

It really just seems crazy to chose Thibs over Doc in this scenario. With an NBA championship under his belt and soon to be 2 consecutive seasons of 60+ wins i just don't even see how there is a debate at all. We are talking about this specific celtics team and Doc has proven that he is the perfect fit......I know Thibodeau certainly has aided this team tremendously and he deserves a lot of credit but come on just subbing him in for Doc next season just sounds loco

I think that's exactly what most of the people have been answering. At least, I did. As CelticG1 says, it just seems crazy.

I bet Thibs does get a head coaching offer this offseason. I feel as if the team going to the Finals last year hurt him in a way because teams had already filled their vacancies by the time the season was over for the Celtics. Let's hope that happens again.

I happen to think in a head coach it has to be 80% about team respect and 20% about actual x's and o's. Both of those are rough numbers, but you catch the drift. Doc has done a remarkable job of getting that team respect thing, and that is something that is so underrated in the NBA today. He gets my thumbs up for a lot of the x's and o's, too. Love what the team does most of the time in end of game situations and out of timeouts.

Thibs will probably be pretty good as a head coach, but it is unknown at this point of time. I'll take the KNOWN QUANTITY.

A proven NBA coach versus an unknown commodity? How is this an interesting question? If Doc goes, I'm not even sure promoting Thibs would be the best move. We would also have to look at what other coaches are available before handing the keys to TT.

Ironic that the next post after this is somebody saying I want to get rid of Doc.

Kidding, right? Thibbs is a great assistant, but we already saw this year what disaster happens when he's left with head coach duties ... total melt-down. No WAY I want him as head coach!
