Off to check out the gym this morning.  One problem.  What to wear?  And I don't mean in the fashion sense.  I literally don't have much in the way of exercise clothes...sweats, shorts etc...I have the sock and sneakers covered.
Yup

I joined the gym today.  I did 20 minutes on a treadmill and 10 on a bike.  I worked up a sweat and got the heart working a bit.  I'll go back tomorrow and dig in a little more.

Had a bowl of some heart health branny cereal with skim milk, a banana, a glass of oj, and a cup of black joe.

For lunch had a spinach salad with low fat dressing and some chicken and some other good stuff in it.  Snacked on an apple and some unsalted almonds.

Been drinking lots of water.

The first true test of day one comes tonight when we go to the Mexican place for dinner.  I usually like to eat my weight in tortilla chips before ordering, then I generally end up ordering some bit of fried yumminess for dinner.

Any suggestions for the Mexican dinner?

I was really pleasantly surprised with the gym.  It's big and pretty clean etc...and it's only $25 a month with no membership fees or anything.
Yup

Any suggestions for the Mexican dinner?

try plain tacos with meat or chicken, ask for carne asada and not juicy one
mexican tortilla is slim and have little carbs, specially for the size
avoid avocado, guacamole is high on fat.
Drink only water or mineral water with lemon that taste good with mexican
ask for ensalada fresca uf they have and not cabbage or anything with mayo.
U can try some gringas too, or even a chicken torta the secret is eat one and only
one plate, and drink water or mineral water.
Dont go even CLOSE to burritos or chimichangas theyre mortal for diets.

Question is, did the clown makeup run?

No, but the giant shoes were hard as hell to slip into the sleeves on the bike.

Whatever advice you get here,
please cut me a slice of the
action. I could use it  ???

Join the CB Health Club!

I'm serious...I'm up for whatever.  I just need to be accountable somewhere, and I know for [dang] sure I check in here at least once a day. (of course I could be exercising instead...but you get my point).

I am in!

The best thing for me is snacking. I know it sounds counter intuitive but it helps me cut down on how much I eat in the day and its supposed to help your metabolism if you eat something every 3 or 4 hours. Of course it has to be healthy snacks like fruit/cereal/yogurt/nuts.

Also a good breakfast just having anything for breakfast doesn't work for me it has to be protein heavy.

Cut out soda/alcohol/juice if you can and drink lots of water. You can have milk too since calcium is supposed to help you manage your weight.

Try to go to bed early and have a good night's sleep. It curbs the late night snacking and people who get enough sleep are supposed to be light. Always take the stairs and walk or bike when you can.

And I apologize if this not manly enough but I'd recommend yoga or pilates. For me its much easier than regular workouts and I find it very relaxing so it keeps me healthy and lowers my stress level.

Huzzah for Celtics Blog Health Club!

I just started the following workout last week, mixed in with a couple days of interval cardio work in between, and will be going shortly this evening after finishing up some studying (work 7:15am - 4:15pm, study 'til 7:15pm (okay, I fell asleep for a half hour from 5-5:30) and then gym 'til 9pm..... oh how I miss the college life):

http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/golf-weight-training.html

My reasons are 3 fold:

1) Only 23 years old, but almost 2 years of a sedentary office lifestyle and a love of cheeseburgers has caught up with my once rapid metabolism (driving license from when I was 18 says 6'0" - 145 lbs... well, I'm 170 lbs now and ain't been getting any taller.

2) I've had very poor posture for a long time, and couple with a lot of golf growing up, my lower back is in pretty bad shape already.... this golf-specific workout routine is big on strengthening the core.

3) I want my 300 yard drives to be 330 yard drives.

Anyways... find some exercise routine like that, Redz.  I am like a lot of people... start to exercise then fall off after a few weeks.  Well I'm really trying to stick to this and since it is for a purpose, or three, I've been doing well so far.

I can empathize with the love of cheeseburgers; easily my biggest weakness

  • Basketball is like chess, only without the dice
This thread is useless without peer pressure. To enhance it, we need:

a) current weight
b) goal (w/ timeframe)
c) updates

These are just the basics. JMO.

I want to add what Mosio said earlier.  You mentioned you have bad knees because of being a catcher in baseball.  In general the elliptical machines are much less stressful on your knees. I highly recommend it.  The combination of weight lifting and cardio is important so what Moiso was saying 3 days of lifting and 2 days of cardio or vice versa is a very good idea.  I have that routine and helps keep a good balance in your life if you don't want to cut out the beers or some of the bad food and still enjoy those things.  You don't have to turn into a fitness freak just something that help you lose a little weight and give you more energy.   I would also recommend talking to a personal trainer so you have a plan of attack when you enter the gym and keep track of what you do writing down some realistic goals.  If you never really lifted weights before it can be a little intimidating at first and having someone show you the ropes is important.

Oh and get an ipod if you don't have one already.  It helps the workouts go by much faster.
