Last night i had my local rec basketball championship, now trust me i know its rec basketball but i just wanted your guys input on this call (my team is mr. sparkle).

Currently the score is:
Mr. Sparkles car wash- 60
Panda Palace- 59

We have the ball with 29.4 seconds left. Our best player has the ball and is basically just stalling around with the ball. Dribbling it around wasting time, cause the other team has opted not to foul. The clock winds down to 10 seconds left the Panda Palace is running towards him to foul, and the ref blows the whistle for a 3-second violation, on a player down low, giving red the ball. They run down court hit the game winning shot we lose.

Now if you go by the rule the ref made the right call. However there wasn't a single person in the gym that thought our best player was going to pass it to our center when he's about to get fouled for free throws. What do you think?

Im looking for consolation here. Im quite devastated.

I think you should smack the kid that got called for 3 seconds.  That's a bonehead move.

Your center should have known enough to stay out of the paint, especially if your best player was just wasting time and not intending to pass or shoot. Good call by the ref.

Low basketball IQ buy the kid in the paint, and all of your teammates who let him stand there.

Kind of a weird call for Rec ball though.

Yeh, it had to have been a pretty blatant 3 seconds for him to get called for 3 seconds at that point.  On the bright side, you'll have something to give him a hard time about for the rest of his life.

Tough loss  :(
Yup

Is his last name Webber? CW must have a lot of kids floating around somewhere.

Having been a ref for a number of years, and done more than my share of rec league games, here's my 2 cents.

I would have told your center to get out of the paint. If after I'd told him he stayed there, than yes, I would have called 3 seconds.

It's hard to judge as there are a lot of factors I don't know. How long was he in the paint, did the ref tell him to move, how old are the kids?

Its a high school rec league. Im play on the B team that plays first and third quarters because im the youngest of the juniors on my team. The player who got called on is a junior as well.

Im not completely sure if he ever told him to get out of the paint. But judging by the players reaction to the call he seemed to be pretty shocked by it. So i don't think he told him to get out of the paint.

Im not sure how long he was in the paint. My guess is it prolly was for a good amount of time. I don't see him making that call unless it was over 5 seconds. But really, no one was paying attention. Mainly because when he made the call, there was a whole lot of action on the opposite side of the floor as our player was trying to avoid getting fouled.

I just think its a shame the season had to end on a call like that.

I have the game on tape, and just got up the courage to watch it (i was in too much pain to watch it last night after it happened) and i just have to say it was a god awful call.

He was maybe in the lane for three seconds, and i stress, maybe. I might upload the video sometime so you guys can see. I wish i was just letting off steam. But im not, it was a very poor call.

Meh, whatever, just rec basketball.
