Glad that the NBA is being consistent with the "don't leave the bench during a fight" rule. Odom pretty clearing ran into the scrum and shoved Roy once before Rambis threw him back to the bench.

Quote
Lamar Odom of the Los Angeles Lakers has been suspended one game without pay for leaving the immediate vicinity of the bench during an altercation, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA executive VP of basketball operations.

The incident occurred with two seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 111-94 victory over the Lakers at Rose Garden in Portland last night.

Odom will serve his suspension tomorrow night when the Lakers face the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center.

They obviously thought long and hard about it because I think it is pretty easy to determine if someone has left the bench area or not. But Stern got it right in the end.

Its hard to figure things out if a Laker is involved.  ;D Celtics or Suns not so much.

So...Odom gets a suspension, but Ariza doesn't?  ???
God bless and good night!

Ariza would likely have been suspended if he hadn't been kicked out of the game. The NBA doesn't like to have a player suspended and kicked out of games unless its something crazy. Shaq and Perk have both had similar nasty fouls for which they were just ejected from that game.

Nor should he have. one of the few times i agree with the NBA's ruling on a matter.

That was a very very very dangerous play. There was no way he could have made a play at the ball unless he was stretch armstrong....

Odom got what he deserved by violating the rule.  Not only did he step away from the bench area, but he made contact with participants in the mayhem.  At least they got this one right.

Suspending someone for one toe on the court is ridiculous, but for what Odom did (which could have escalated the incident) the rule actually works.  Imagine that.  How come Bavetta and the boys didn't see that and assess him a T? Hmmm.   ::)

I hope he's planning to appeal the suspension. After all he didn't move away from the bench. Just like he was making a play for the ball when he tackled Ray. Poor misunderstood Lamar why does the league persecute you so  ::)
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

I agree that this rule should be followed out and i'm glad it has been. It is kind of funny though to read how they are reviewing the situation with odom without mention of Ariza's initial play. It's almost like Odom distracted the NBA league officials by leaving the bench and they are so caught up in that rule now  that they aren't even looking at at Ariza's hard foul

Let's hope the end result is a Lakers loss to the Rockets. That would be handy.

been over this in depth in the other thread, so im not going to retype. i disagree.

EDIT: also, what do you mean the league didn't look at ariza's foul? the reviewed it, and actually downgraded it from a flagrant 2 yesterday. It was the right call, toss him then to preserve order, change to correct call (flagrant one) later.
