For one Dwight gets away with a lot of hacking so they're in no position to talk. For another its ridiculous and a little  insulting to suggest the Celtics bigs can afford to get into foul trouble. Building on the flopping comment about Shaq, I don't see the need to be take petty jabs at the opponent after a win. Its a bit too Phil Jackson-ish for my liking especially because he's been gracious in his comments when the Celtics beat them.

Quote
"They're very physical, they push and shove, they body,'' said Van Gundy of the Celtics. "When teams establish that style of play, they're allowed to do it.'' Dwight Howard (6 of 13) was held to 18 points in part because, according to Van Gundy, "they can take two hands in the guy's back and just shove him, which is what (Boston center Kendrick) Perkins does.''

The younger Magic can't develop that style because their big men -- All-Stars Howard and Rashard Lewis -- can't risk the foul trouble. In that sense, Van Gundy conceded, it is fair to refer to his Magic as a finesse team. "Dwight is built to play more physically than anybody in the league,'' said Van Gundy, but he can't afford to indulge Howard's physique. "Kendrick Perkins can be as physical as he wants.''

--- the article also has an interesting tid-bit on Rondo and KG's halftime coaching efforts.
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

wow, between phx and this, van gundy sure whines alot about the other teams defense of howard.

It's getting almost Mike brown comical.

SVG after every game where a team doesnt just let howard dunk:

"they were trying to keep howard from using his one effective move, the dunk, and i really think the league needs to look into that. What am i supposed to do, teach my big man actual low post moves? come on now!"

EDIT: also what is he talking about with perk not having to worry about foul trouble in that matchup but howard does? Like we have another bruising center off the bench we can put on howard? If we do, I'd love to know when we signed him.

This is why, while others didn't like it, I loved Shaq smacking Van Gundy down for his comments about Shaq last week.  The guy always has something to say and has no business getting into a tit for tat with a player.

I agree, I loved the Comments too, I just didn't like Shaq getting Ewing and JVG involved...

I officially can't stand SVG.

Its not even true...people act like we've been developing this reputation for a decade, when the truth is we were one of the worst teams in basketball 2 years ago..

Ive watched every game this year, and we get away with less then the other elite teams, and get blown for a whistle  on every other possesion, and perk and BBD are barely allowed to breathe and its because of coaches comments like this before and after every game we play, we get away with nothing while the other team gets away with anything....total nonsense

It looks like the Celtics' reputation as a "dirty team" keeps growing, though it is totally unjustified...

I don't know what the problem is with Stan Van Gundy right now but his comments about Shaq and now about the Celtics are clearly inappropriate, especially when you consider that his team has won the two games he keeps complaining about.

because his star player is only effective offensivly when he can get away with murder, and thus every time a big physical center keeps him back to the basket, SVG gripes and whines in the hope that the next time he plays Shaq/Perk/whoever, Superman gets all the calls.

Its the same thing all coaches with one effective star do to protect them and get more trips to the FT line. See Jackson, Phil in the past and Brown, Mike in the present.

Howard shoves people on every defensive rebound and if this game was being called consistently, he would have fouled out even without his phantom 4th foul -- and way before the end of the game.

I am not even going to go into his history of retaliating after a whistle (remember that punch he tried to throw at Rondo a couple of years back?)

And what is Howard doing when he (or other bigs) are banging into the chests of Perk and whoever trying to get closer to the basket. Is this physical or dirty. Is it an offensive foul or not. Do the Celtics have any right to defend?

Does Van Gundy notice the shoves in the back the Celtics get (such as Petro/Scals at it's worst), or the holds, or the slapping wrists, or trying to hit PP's dislocated finger, or kneeing PP in the thigh when he goes to the basket, etc. Van Gundy is the anti Tommy except that Tommy is usually right and when a replay or Mike says Tommy's wrong he admits it.

The comment about the Magic in Hollinger's last Power Ranking is quite right :

Quote from: Hollinger
Forget all the Shaq stuff. This week's real SVG story is why the coach chose to loudly lament the media's supposed lack of respect for his team right after it nearly blew a 22-point lead to the injury-riddled Celts.

We wouldn't have to push him if they would start calling him for 3 second violations.

What amazes me most is how a man of Stan's... girth... is able to put his foot in his mouth.  Yoga classes?

Sure thing Stan... the NBA, the most star-loving league I know of, was giving KP43 and the world famous Cs bench the calls over Superman.

Sure thing.

Have you ever tried reading a scouting report, whine, and shave your mustache with a weed-whacker at the same time?
