The Celtics biggest need right now is the backup 3.

If they cut Gabe or Scal, it would not be to beg Smith, it would be to sign a wing to backup Pierce.
Celtics fan for life.

If Scal's third concussion is as dire as it sounds, maybe we can get a medical exemption for him and open up a roster spot that way without cutting him.  This may mean going into luxury tax territory a bit, but not much, I imagine.

As for being weak at the wing right now, I think we should throw Walker and/or Giddens in there as a baptism of fire.  When PP went down with that knee injury in the finals, Doc made a big speech about why they have 15 guys on the team, and that they overcome.  I think it was ridiculous seeing Marbury and House guarding guys five inches taller during the Detroit game.  Would have wanted to see Hermann try that against Walker.

to me, the most logical explanation is that Danny did not want to risk the Smith buyout not happening and lose out on Moore. Presti was reportedly wanting pretty big concessions on Smith's part to get bought out....

I think Danny was focused on getting Mar and thought Moore would fit the bill...

I think this is right.  Again, there was no guarantee that Joe Smith was going to be bought out, or even if he was that he would have ended up here.  It is one thing for him to "say" that he wanted to end up here, but once the Cavs start waving the checkbook around... you never know.

Plus, I really think your last statement is on the money:  DA viewed getting Marbury as the more important action.

I definitely agree. He also said he was happy to stay in OKC so what I can conclude from his statements is that he was ambivalent at best. Just because he said he wanted to come to Boston doesn't mean he'd have ended up here. Posey wanted to stay in Boston, KG wanted to stay in Minny. Look how it turned out.
Tommy: He's got a line about me. Tell him the line.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

Smith will break a leg, Gooden will injure his groin... and all of this will be yesterday's news.

Bring them on.

I really don't understand why there's so much negativity around here. Our team is a monster, don't you realize it?

Competing with three other monsters.  Two of those competitors will improve (Cleveland and San Antonio), and two of them have better records (Cleveland and Los Angeles).

Agreed, the obsession with Joe smith is LAUGHABLE, and the dismay towards the great guy we signed is pathetic...get over it already is how I feel

Cleveland couldve improved alot more than a signing of joe smith...this is barely even relevant with the loss ben wallace, it basically brings them back to where they were

San Antonio is somewhat irrelvant, and gooden is dumber than tony allen

The celtics added 2 players, and by doing so improved as well, that and they need to get healthy..Marbury and Moore are better additions than Joe smith and thats it

Moore adds little.  We'll see regarding Starbury.

Imo, smith adds little...just like he added little last year with cleveland and PJ brown added little with us...thats all we need, minor contributions.

So gooden has already made SA better (is it even official?) but we'll have to wait and see regarding our guys? ok but hasnt Gooden been injured much of the season?

And Marbury is the best player added by anyone

We'll see with Gooden and Smith too. Marbury is a far better player than all of the players mentioned anyways.

Gooden and Smith have contributed this season, and in recent seasons.  Gooden is averaging 13 and 9.  You don't think he can help?

Starbury didn't play basketball for a year, and has a reputation for being a team cancer.  I'm not ready to label him a savior yet.  I'm not going to decide to blindly ignore this guy's recent past just because he's on the Celtics.

If 1) he shakes off his rust, 2) plays a team game, 3) commits to at least passable defense, and 4) shuts up.  We'll see.

So a 39 yr old not playing for a year could shake of his rust, but it's questionable that Marbury can?

Personally Id much rather have Moore over Smith anyway. Smith plays a similar game to both big baby and powe, two guys that are playing well in their roles. We have Scal Baby and Powe all playing Smith's position off the bench. I'm very glad we finally have some extra height on our bench with a legit veteran center.

Gooden is dumber than tony allen, what dont you understand about that? he was the scapegoat in cleveland and their fans couldnt stand him, and for good reason..hes also injured and averages 13 and 9 by being a selfish, stupid basketball player

What was so great about what Joe smith added to cleveland last year? he was a revolving door when they put him on KG and clevelands worst post defender by a large amount, Mikki Moore literally couldve brought to cleveland everything Smith did

i love how you have already counted on these guys being great contributors for there teams(nothings even official), but are pretty much writing off our signings as utter failures
