I'll be curious to see what the got/whether the vrable trade was part of this.

I will withhold any judgment about the trade till we hear what it is for.

I'd be shocked if it was for anything more than the 2009 KC 2nd rounder (#34 overall).

Vrabel and Cassel?  I'd say a 1 and a 4.

How about a 2 and Gonzalez?

2nd round pick.

not great.

I previously was convinced that the Patriots wouldn't be able to work out a trade sending quarterback Matt Cassel to the Chiefs because I believed that new Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli and his former colleagues in New England feared the perception that one side got snookered.

There was no such fear, but it won't change the perception that one side got snookered.

Peter King of SI.com (who also does some work for NBC, and pretty much every other media company on the planet) reports that the Chiefs gave up only a second-round draft pick for Cassel.

Wow.

A second-round pick, for a guy who merited a $14.65 million, one-year contract based on his play in 2008.

Let's consider that for a second.  Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was traded for a second-round pick.  A.J. Feeley was traded for a second-round pick.

So, with all due apologies to the Patriots, the current score is Pioli 1, Pats 0.

and we still havent heard what happened in the vrable trade (which I dont like)

The Vrabel trade and the Cassel trade are the same.

Peter King is reporting both players for only the 34th pick.

I am totally confused, unless the Pats are going to use the cap space and the pick for Peppers.

2nd round pick sounds right.
The media have been blowing Cassel's value out of proportion.
Also, Cassel didn't "merit a $14M one year contract", it was a franchise tag that was clearly a strategic move.

That cannot be right. Vrabel and Cassel for 1 2nd round pick? There has to be another pick in there or some other consideration. That just can't be all they got back.

One of the positives of getting the trade completed now (ie: sooner rather than later) is that it clears Cassel's salary, giving the Patriots more flexibility in pursuing free agents.

I fully agree with this, although I think there has to be more than what Peter King is reporting unless Felger is right and the Krafts were mad at Vrabel over his comments about Patriot's Place.

I dont believe it was both players for only the second rounder.

Adam Schefter at NFL.com is claiming that a 'mystery team' is trying to make a last push

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.

The Falcons gave up TWO 2nd rounders for MATT FREAKIN SCHAUB!

48th overall in 2007 and 39th overall in 2008.

Plus,

and we GAVE Vrabel to KC. I have never doubted Belichick before, but man this on paper looks like a godawful move.
