This is making a big deal out of nothing.

It would be sad if the Celtics weren't completely motivated to play the Cavs anyway.  These kind of comments motivate the fans, not the players.  It would be different if he called out the Celtics specifically

He shouldve kept his mouth shut, did he guarantee the cavs would be in the finals? yes. Should he think that way? yes, but he shouldnt say it regardless of being asked...that was stupid, and doesnt help the cavs in any way and very well could be used for bulletin board material

and as far marktech...the celtics are already 110% motivated, period..they dont need this comment, but why poke at the bear? just shut your mouth and say "we're motivated towards that and will work our hardest to get there" something along those lines...hes never played in a playoff game and is guaranteeing a finals birth? ha! cmon Mo, you're better than that

If they are already motivated 110% then what Mo said does not matter to them, nor do they care.

Boston fan are overreacting.

...which has me wondering:
Is Mo related to Dick Bavetta?
He must be since he can guarantee
stuff like this. Oh, well  ::)
That's funny.  TP.

players don't take things personaly unless its targeted smack talk?

not that its the same thing, and your right in that they already get up to play clevland without any "bullitin board" stuff, but tell that to the nuggetts.

from that post game:

ray:

"The Celtics were certainly motivated to avenge their 94-85 loss to the Nuggets at the Garden in November, one of just four losses at home for Boston this season.

“We’ve been pretty sour about that all year,” Allen said. “We felt as though we should’ve won that game, they stole it from us. We remembered it. "

karl: I think it was a championship team [that] wanted to kick somebody's butt," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "they wanted to pay us back for boston, and they did that."

“I will hurt you for this. A day will come when you think you’re safe and happy and your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth. And you will know the debt is paid.” – Tyrion

A defending champ doesnt doesnt trip and fall into a 46-12 record...theyre motivated.

Stupid comment, and Boston will take it personal, period

"It's going to be a lot of fun watching them take down those balloons one at a time."

Players definitely pay attention to this stuff.  A good coach, as the man quoted above was, will definitely bring it up to his team if he happens to catch it.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

I don't know if this Mo Williams thing compares to the 1969 Finals, but great point about a moment in which it is appropriate to use something outside of your team to motivate them.  Russell knew they'd see those balloons when they entered the forum and he took the chance to tick them off real good moments before they took the floor.  TP.

what has mo williams EVER won?

Up until last year, the same thing that KG, PP and Ray Allen won - nothing.

The guy is young and fresh into his career.  Saying "what has he won" is moot.

He [Mo Williams] didn't back down from the bold statement before the game.

"That's our goal," Williams said. "I expect nothing less than to get to the Finals. That's what we're playing for, to win a championship."

He said he wasn't worried about the quote appearing on Boston's locker-room wall.

"I don't care," Williams said. "They know. It ain't no secret. They feel the same way."

Brown said even though there's a lot of games left in the regular season, he basically agrees with the statement.

"Our goal is an NBA championship," Brown said. "That's not something we're trying to hide from. We have a lot of respect for the Boston Celtics. If we want to make it there, we have to take it from them. We put enough pressure on ourselves than from anybody else."

It's definitely going to be special. It'll be my first time playing with Pau [Gasol]. I think once we get that combination going, I can't see anybody stopping us. I think we're going to try and chase the Bulls' record.

Kids are cocky. Those teams don't have the kind of veteran leadership of the C's, so they have to deal with these over-confidence problems.

Isn't there a difference between saying "x is our goal" and "we're achieving x for sure, nobody can stop us"?

but none of the big three ever publicly guaranteed an NBA Finals Berth.

So you think it's no big deal. Great. I, on the other hand, think the Celtics aren't oblivious to what goes on around them. Sure, they're motivated to beat the Cavs in the playoffs, but come on, Doc walks into the locker room and plays the recording of Mo guaranteeing that they will beat the Celtics and get to the Finals...you think that won't have any effect??

Did the big 3 ever guarantee a finals birth? not to my knowledge
And they won alot more than Mo williams ever has, they all made the conference finals prior to last year, as the face of there franchise and combined for over 20 all star games
Mo williams has never played in a playoff game and was a nobody before playing alongside Lebron james, he is now whining about not making the all star game forcing himself into the game, and making guarantees  left and right, including beating the defending champs "for sure" like theyre nothing.
I can see why cavs fans are defending there guy, but cmon, theres nothing you can say to convince me this comment was a good one and will benefit the cavs, it was stupid- especially after his all star game guarantees blew up in his face and he looked like a punk

i will be there and will do my part.  might have to bust out the vader mask and do some jedi mind tricks (they only work on the weak minded, so the entire cavs team is screwed ;))
