i guess cav's can offer him a full MLE type deal for 5 years or something, although they may be able to only out bid the c's by a million dollars this year alone, a full MLE type deal could guarntee something like 20 millions in future years, may be a deal too good to refuse, mind you the cavs cap number is coming down by like something like $20 million because wally and snow will be off the books next year.
There's no way Cleveland is giving Smith the full MLE
Why not? They'd be paying him the prorated MLE, which is aboute $1.9 million for the rest of the season. The C's can only offer about $900K.
Even worse, they can make a much bigger multi-year offer: in a 3 years offer, the Celtics partial-MLE contract would be something like $900K, $3M, $3.1M; the Cavs offer could go like $1.9M, $5.9M, $6M. (just an example, I don't see any of the clubs going that far).
If they really want him, I bet they're getting him. I see two things on our favour: Kevin Garnett and the possibility of Smith holding a grudge towards Ferry. But how often that kind of stuff out-weights the money?
