The chemistry thing is true, and I think they like having a taller, more reliable shooter as opposed to the 3 6 foot shooting guards masquerading as points. But I think the biggest reason for no Cleveland trade is that they have absolutely nothing else to throw into a trade. As much as teams are looking to dump salary, they're not going to dump All Stars unless they get cap relief AND young, cheap talent. Teams want the KG trade (cap relief and young future All Star like Al) or Kidd trade (cap relief and young All Star Devin Harris) not the Pau trade (cap relief without any real potential stars, just Marc Gasol).

I think the Gasol trade provided that much of a lesson to other GMs who didn't want to be this year's Chris Wallace, even in tighter economic times. We are pretty fortunate that nobody wanted to repeat that trade, since Cleveland just did not have the cheap, young talent to throw in with their expiring contracts. If they had that young talent to include, Cleveland would be one actual All Star better right now.

so you think that Ferry was rebuffed as opposed to the other way around?

possible. certainly for Jamison and RJeff....but for Shaq? I don't know. I look at PHOs salary situation and think that if they could unload him, they would have driven him to the team that would take him...

think bron bron is a knick in '10, surprised the knicks weren't more aggressive in dumping salary.

They made the right moves.  Their going to have plenty of room to sign Lebron in 2010, and its stupid to make every trade that comes up just b/c it has expiring money.  Trading away Nate Robinson would have been bad.  Lebron isnt just going to come to New York, just for the sake of coming there.  If the Knicks just have garbage players to put around Lebron come 2010, no way he'll sign.

Maybe ferry saw this years team as a contender already, and decided to not tie the money he saves this year when wally comes off the books in hopes of using it to resign a happy, title contending James...

absolutely crazy. if i was lebron i'd be disgusted. they may have lost him today. it almost seems it's like ferry saying "well lebron is so good he can win it for us as we are (and he is right that that COULD be true) but maybe you wanna help the guy out just a little. maybe it IS that other teams were the ones saying "no thanks." also is'nt a shaq buyout likely now? i apologize. i'm awful with all things involving numbers/salaries.

It's not like the Cavs didn't try to get a deal done... You know the other team has to consent to the Wally trade being offered.

Rumor has it that the Cavs are going to bid heavily for Joe Smith.  That's going to suck, big time, when we end up with Mikki Moore, who is an inferior player.

How about Phx looking to deal Shaq for Wally and Pavlovic?  And Ferry refusing...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3918898

Here is a team chalk full of shooters, who is desperatly thin up front with a two year window to win it all with LBJ in the fold.  And they get the chance to add a Shaq who is in the midst of an All Star season, and they turn it down???  So they can keep Wally world and let him expire?

Ferry straight blew it, no way around it.  On the otherhand, let's dust off the tequila and celebrate!!

Yes. They have a lot left of their MLE. Plus - Smith was on their team last year and knows the system. The way I see it, if he can choose between Boston and Cleveland. He'll go to Cleveland. More money to offer and more benefits in Cleveland.

According to Chris Sheridan,

Quote
"Cleveland has a big slice of its midlevel exception, and the Cavs would be willing to throw a sizeable chunk of it at Joe Smith if he is bought out by Oklahoma City. ...

Cleveland has $5.135 million of its mid-level exception left, and Boston has $2.392 million of its mid-level remaining. I'm told the Cavs, like ESPN's Ric Bucher, are of the belief that Moore is going to wind up in Boston."
