We are all fans of teams in other sports, whether it be in college football, the NFL, MLB or any other great spectator sport (sorry if I left your favorite out). However, I was posed with a great question last year and my response came without hesitation which surprised even me.
See, I grew up in Alabama and was taught from early on that my blood was Crimson. Bear Bryant was not too far from diety during my youth and even now Nick Saban is taking the state by storm. However, I was a skinny guy and always enjoyed playing basketball more than both football and baseball which are the two other major sports in the region (besides NASCAR). In 1986, during round 2 of the NBA playoffs, my cousin, Pat, invited me, my dad and my brother to go with him and his boys to see the Celtics play at the Omni in Atlanta. I was instantly hooked by Bird and the C's. We met Danny Ainge before the game and I even ended up graduating from BYU just like him. When I run into ex-classmates from HS I am still associated with the Celtics above anything else. People I haven't heard from in years found me through email to congratulate me after we won #17.
So, what was the question? Well, from other Alabama Crimson Tide season ticket holders like me I was asked, "So who are you the bigger fan of, Alabama or Boston?" Without pause I told them Boston, but that Alabama football was a close second. They were shocked. I wasn't. I just told them, "Look, I just love the Celtics more." I guess certain things get in your blood and mine is tinted slightly more green than it is crimson.
