Hmm... maybe he wants to verify I'm on paypal before he creates a invoice through ebay? that way he knows I'm for real?

That would be my guess.  So long as you do the transaction via paypal, you're good.

Roy, and avoid Ebay all together? Wouldn't that put me in jeopardy of getting ripped off?

Nope PayPal will cover it

Redz, Hypothetical:

I buy something off of you using just paypal and you never send me the product... What happens?

Supposedly PayPal has a guarantee on every sale (no different than being covered when you use a credit card).  I've never had to go through the process, but there is a claims process.  It might end being more of a pain in the butt than it's worth to go through the process (PayPal's customer service has not been the greatest in my experience), but there is a system.

Here are there policies etc..

Ok advise time... I'm dropping $625 on these sneakers. This dude just sent me a paypal invoice with a money request... Now, he has a good reputation on Ebay and sells a lot of sneakers... Should I go for it?

I'd feel a little safer if it was through eBay, but the guy probably wants to save a few bucks on fees.

Was this an item you saw on eBay originally?

The only time I've been badly hosed on eBay (and I mean badly), was over an auction a guy offered to end early for me. He had squeaky clean feedback on thousands of transactions.  But by going outside eBay he felt safe hosing me.

I ended up getting my money back but it took several months and a ton of stress.

I'd ask the guy to put on eBay and maybe offer him a few extra bucks for the hassle if it that's what his issue is. (you're willing to spend $625 on some kicks, what's a few more dollars?

We sell quite a bit on ebay.  What he wants is the email address that you use for paypal.  He probably wants to send you a paypal invoice to make payment easier for you.

If you pay by paypal, they back your purchase.  The seller has to mail them with delivery confirmation and if they aren't sent or if they aren't as agreed on, you can file a complaint through paypal.  I made a purchase and they never arrived.  The seller said they sent it but didn't purchase delivery confirmation.  I filed with Paypal and they refunded my money.

What type of fee's would he face for $625 if he were to put them on Ebay?

Ebay does absolutely nothing to protect its buyers from fraudulent sellers, to the point that if they suspend a seller for wrongdoing, they refuse to tell the seller's customers why the suspension was levied. PayPal is somewhat better - I've recovered money for being ripped off in the past, and I'm in the midst of a claim for a fake $200 item I was sold right now - but generally speaking, it's "let the buyer beware."
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

If he listed them on Ebay he would pay anywhere from 35 cents to 4 dollars per pair to list them(depending on what he started them at and then 8.75% of the selling price up to 25 dollars and 3.5% on anything above $25 as a final value fee.

Ebay has really been trying to squeeze out the smaller sellers lately.  They have restricted the amount sellers can charge for shipping in the media category and their restrictions are pretty ridiculous.  There are ways around it but it is a pain.  They have also instituted a detailed seller rating system where you rate your seller on a basis from 1- 5 stars.  If you read their descriptions, you would think that 4 stars is a very good rating because 4 stars say that you were pleased with your transaction.  But, if a seller's ratings dip below 4.3, they are suspended so giving 4 stars basically may result in a seller being suspended.   It is very deceptive. But the thing is, the big corporate sellers can have hundreds of negative feedbacks and a 2 for a seller rating and still keep selling because these rules only apply to the smaller individual sellers.

On the other hand, Paypal is very quick to lock an account if they suspect any kind of fraud.

Ebays unbelievable micromanagement of its small sellers will eventually backfire on them. We have already seen their stock price drop from an all time high of around 42 to todays price of around 13. They treat their sellers terribly with little or mostly no customer service and then wonder why things are going poorly and then blame it on the economy.

FL,

I used to have a shop on eBay and thousands of records listed.  I also ran a word of mouth drop off biz on the side.  I've become so annoyed with eBay that I'm finding hard to muster up the energy to even list a sure seller any longer.  It's a shame.  They really cut their nose to spite their face.
