Recently read article where O'Bryant spoke of his difficulty gaining weight, and his focus on getting stronger.  Robert Parish was a great 5, and played alot more low post. POB 9/10 possessions is in high post. He needs to use better leverage to get the ball in closer to the hoop, where he can be more effetive. His size is wasted too much up top. Yes, he sees the floor well, and has made some nifty Bill Walton passes out of the high post. But he will be of far greater value by establishing low post position.  Like the Chief. POB has very good shooting touch, I see no reason why he doesn't work on that little 10 foot turnaround that Chief perfected.

Parish was also a high draft pick by the Warriors who they got rid of after claiming he was a bust....

There is one problem...O'Bryant doesn't have enough talent to hold Parish's jock strap.

One other difference.

The Chief was a 17 and 10 guy for GS.

Jury is still out for me on POB. I didn't like the signing but...he adds another 15-20 pounds in muscle & strength...you might see him gain some confidence and that could lead to better play.

I'm giving him and outside chance to become a decent back up center under the tutelage of the Celtics and I'm giving him two years to get there.

Remember, he's only a rookie age wise right now.

I think the Chief is a good comparison. He is long, can shoot the ball, will never be a physical player but might be able to at least figure out how to manage with what he has.

Good comparison though there is a talent deficit relative to Parish, I understand the compaison.
I'm starting to see him play a little more aggressively, throw himself into the action a little more. I like his length and his shooting and passing.

I'm holding judgement right now...and just watching for small signs of movement in the right direction, which I'm seeing...slowly.

Exactly...and playing style or not, POB couldn't even crack Nellie's rotation on a mediocre team.

Not fair to compare. Chief was 23 his rookie season with Golden State and  averaged only 9 points and 7 rebounds, playing nearly 20 minutes a game.  POB is still 22 (he won't even turn 23 unitl the end of this season).  Look, I am not going to say POB will match up eventually with Chief-- we should be so lucky -- but O'Bryant still is very young, has VG athleticism for his size, a good shooting touch, and other physical tools and a body that remind me of a young Chief, who was a pretty skinny guy, but unafraid to mix it up. Chief also came with a reputation of being underachieving and lazy when the trade was made. (I was in my mid twenties when Boston traded for him, most bloggers here were in diapers or not born.) Why do you think GS was willing to give up Parish and the 3rd pick in the draft for Joy "Barely Cares" Carroll and a 10?  Because they thought Barely Cares would be a huge upgrade for them in the middle over Chief. It is way too early to give up on POB. I think Danny is going to give the guy another year at least.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
POB was a nice idea, but it's apparent it simply isn't working out...he doesn't have the DRIVE to be an nba player.

i see glimpses of talent, but it's always easier to show that when the game is over, you're leading by 20 points and being guarded by another 12th man on the opposing team.  doc has stated there is "celtic speed and patrick speed..." and THAT will spell POB's demise.

we have an outstanding big man coach...yes, you can teach a kid skills, but you canNOT teach a kid desire.  POB is NO robert parish...

POB isn't even an acie earl...

the kid just needs to hit the weights, he's shown all the basic skills that can make you good, midrange shots, blocking, good passing, rebounding. its just that he's weak.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
POB has as much chance of turning into Robert Parish as Gerald does of turning into Tmac.

Yes, Parish is a player that POB should aspire to be, but he might be better served to pick a more realistic goal.  POB doesn't have the skills or instincts that Parish had, and I doubt very much that he ever develops them.

Parish increased his strength, balance and flexibility by training in the martial arts. Maybe POB should give that a try.

My impersonation of Bill Simmons impersonating Hubie Brown: "You're Patrick O'Bryant, you had tremendous upside potential, you have great length, but your team (who has no backup center) won't let you on the floor because you couldn't identify intensity if it was dripping off of KG's nose as he's screaming in your face."

I think the intensity thing is overblown by Doc for a purpose which in the end will make POB a better player.

I have never seen a 7 footer with so little body strength. Boykins could back down POB if he wanted.

I think O`bryant needs at least 2 years before he can contribute to a team in the NBA.
