This guy is such an idiot.  His obsession with stats used to be interesting but now he just makes awful statements based on his PER stats.  Vince Carter?!

I usually respect his analysis, but agree with you 100% on this one. No way Vince ahead of Pierce.

I think Pierce is a shoo-in. As much as I would love to see Rajon on All Star team, I think Ray should get the nod before him. Ray is having a better season than last year, and Rondo is going to have so many great years to come.

You could make a case for Carter.  You could make a case for Harris.

But with NJ's record, there is no way to make a case for both of them both making it.

On the one hand, he talks about how Paul has "taken up the challenge of guarding top wing players and done an excellent job of it."  That's his argument for including Rondo and leaving off Pierce.

Yet, he seems to completely ignore the defensive side when advocating for VC.

Does defense matter or not, John?

Defense is very hard to measure with basketball individual metrics, that's why hollinger analysis is always so flawed.

Well, it doesn't matter during the All-Star game.

Hollinger has been sipping too much of his PER juice... Vince Carter is not an all star. And winning absolutely should be taken into account for all star selections.

And what should also be taken into account is the fact that Paul Pierce is, was and always will be a better all-around player than Vince Carter.  The only thing Carter has on Pierce is vertical.

nobody else has noticed yet that Hollinger also put Rondo on the team ahead of Pierce?

I noticed it.  And it just makes it worse.  It gives people the ability to bash the Celtics more for having Rondo on the list.  Pierce is a no-brainer for the team, so there's no use in even debating it.

But some of the mindless posts on ESPN.com about how 15-20 point guards in the league could do what Rondo does, etc. are pretty annoying.  Rondo may not be getting an all-star nod this year, but it's definitely in his future, and won't be just because he plays with 3 other all-stars.  The guy is one of the best point guards in the league, and he's only 22.  Anyone that doesn't see that is fooling themselves and are GREEN with envy.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
I just figured it out...

Mike from DP (or NP or wherever he was from) has morphed into John Hollinger...

Noticed that - of course, he notes it's because Rondo's D is better (ergo, the inconsistency).

I'll make a prediction; if Rondo DOES make it, he wins the game's MVP award.  He just plays at such a different speed than everyone else, and you get the sense that he's DYING to get on stage with Chris Paul and D-Will and the other elite PGs.  He'll have like five steals and twelve assists, and a couple plays that make his defender just look stupid.  He's hard enough to defend when the other guys are TRYING to play D, he's going to embarrass someone BAD.

I'll give you another prediction- even if he does do this and comes up with ridiculous points+rebound numbers, they'll still give the MVP to Lebron because he's Lebron.

Also, Hollinger's clearly missing a few things, but it never ceases to amaze me how so many people don't think Ray Allen's an allstar this year.  He's clearly better, he's often leading our team in scoring, and his shooting %s are approaching ridiculous.  Is it psychological or something?

Harris easily, but VC? Millsap and Carter don't belong on the All-Star teams. Same with Big Al and Granger - numbers wise absolutely but record wise? No. Nelson is debatable too. Personally I'd have Allen and Pierce in there over all of his bench players aside from Bosh. Rondo is deserving, but will we get 4 All-Stars? I doubt it.

Oh, and I'll hold off on saying what I feel about Hollinger; not really up for getting banned.
