It's going to get announced at the BBWA dinner that Baldelli will participate in... The 4th outfielder need is addressed, but still moves to be made...
"Let me call him," Floyd said.

The man shook his head. "O.J. doesn't give out his cell," he said. "He'll call you."

nice.  I view that as positive news on an otherwise glum night.

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
If he can contribute regularly, then great, if he's just going to be sitting on the bench, then this is just a desperate attempt at getting a player with slim name-recognition.

Rocco, when healthy is a more than suitable option, I just hope this isn't another Wade Miller signing.

He is being signed to be the 4th of.  So he will play on scheduled off days for the starters, if certain matchups warrant it, or if an of is injured.

Given JD Drew's injury history, Baldelli will likely see his fair share of at bats.  hopefully the mitochondrial disorder is under check.

Also, Sox apparently are close to signing Smoltz as well.

Link?? I was under the impression Smoltz was going to be a midseason guy like Rocket used to be

If they take the money they saved by not overpaying Texeira and use it to shore up other areas of the team -- as it appears they're doing -- then they're going to be fine.

I've been hoping that he would end up with us since his rookie year. he's a hell of a player when he can stay out there. and this is the team he grew up rooting for...doesn't get better.

I'd like to see them resign Kotsay as well, he could be another backup outfielder and fill in at first base. He proved his worth last year in the playoffs with some clutch hits.

great signing. Its too bad he has some mysterious condition, hopefully its solved to the max. He hasn't even reached his potential yet.

He is a five tool player that may strike out a little too much and walk too little. His full potential is prob something of grady sizemore.

He will be a good 4th outfielder and giving ellsbury a run for his money(his has to be his last chance)

He WASNT a RedSox fan growing up.

Baldelli, the Cumberland, R.I. native has drawn interest from other teams including the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates, but Baldelli, while not growing up a Red Sox fan would prefer sticking close to home.

I cant imagine they would go after Kotsay/Kotsay would want to sign here if they sign Baldelli.  Neither of those guys will want to be 5th OF, and kotsay likely doesnt want to be a backup 1b (he mentioned not wanting to play 1b last year, but was willing to...)

Baldelli's potential 3 years ago may have had the ceiling of Sizemore, but no longer.  The health condition he has is not going away, no matter how great the doctors are (IIRC).  As a result, he will not be able to be a starting player again.  I wish that werent the case, but unfortunately, even the most hopefull of reports seems to indicate that this condition will be with him for the rest of his career (although not as bad, hopefully as it was)

Its not a "mysterious condition" its a documented medical problem, and its not curable.

He wont be giving ellsbury a run for a starting job, he cent start anymore.

However, if he can give us a start every 4-5 days, he's a good 4th outfielder pickup.

It isn't curable but it is easily treatable now that they have correctly diagnosed it. This off season he went to the Dr. and they gave him different medicine for channelepathy (sp?) rather than mitochondrial disorder. He seems to be doing a lot better and should be more healthy than last season.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

right, and from the reports i heard, that doctor says he'll be fine to play with days off in between, which makes him a very good 4th outfielder, but not a guy who's going to challenge to start.

which is fine, because we needed a fouth outfielder.
