The Patriots are nearing a decision to ensure that quarterback Matt Cassel won't be an unrestricted free agent, as scheduled in March.

Sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the Patriots will use a franchise tag on Cassel that will give the team two options: Trade him if all goes well with Tom Brady's rehabilitation from a knee injury or keep him because all is not well with Brady.

The Patriots' intention to franchise Cassel was first reported by the National Football Post.

Maybe news, maybe not. But the Pats are either going to have him in the fold or will benefit from not having him in the fold.

I don't really follow football, but I'm curious how much money Cassel made because of Tom Brady's injury...

What did he get paid this year?

What will he get paid next year and beyond?

What would he have likely been paid next year had Brady never been injured?

Not sure of the exact numbers, but my guess is that he made something like $1 million this year, give or take.

And based on his preseason performance, it would have been questionable whether he would have even been in the league next year, let alone getting a raise.  If that had been the last time other teams had seen him, I can't imagine too many of them would have been jumping at giving him a roster spot.  And it was widely speculated that the Pats wouldn't be resigning him (although these are the same people who speculated about the Pats bringing in a guy like Culpepper...so they could have been way off on that as well).

Suffice it to say that Cassell made himself a career this season.

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
This is good for Matt too, he will make a lot more money by being franchised, and if he is dealt he will sign a long term contract.
