Portland forward Travis Outlaw doesn't believe that the defending-champion Celtics like to be roughed up.

"They are a team that likes to hit first," Outlaw said after Tuesday's win.

"I don't think they like to be hit. So they come out hard and try to hit you as hard as they can to intimidate you. But if you hold your ground or punch first, it rattles them a little bit."

.. pretty annoying stuff like this makes the front page of realGM ( seems like anthing anti-celtic shows up on media outlets alot these days), considering its not really news...but I actually agree 100% with Outlaw.. for a physical defensive team, we get rattled when we get a taste of our own medicine especially on other teams home court...we saw it on this road trip with LAL, GS, and POR....sacremento just laid down like dogs, celtics got lucky for such a gimme game in that stretch...

I think that he is right about that team that incredibly tired looking team that they faced did not like to be hit.  The C's folded a bit in that game, because they looked like they had nothing in the tank.  It certainly doesn't worry me.

i disagree. i think this all relates back to the bench. the starters are carrying too much of the burden to win games (i'm not just talking about minutes) and it left us a little vulnerable on the road trip where mental and physical fatigue sets in more easily.

bottom line. the bench needs to play better.

that's my perspective, anyhoo..

I think the team ran out of gas.

KG definitely did with that half-assed block attempt at the end.

Outlaw is somewhat right we prefer to be the aggressors.

for some reason they took this headline and link off the front page of realGM...hmmmm interesting

----Actually they just moved it right under the headline story about Yi being right behind KG in the All-Star voting(what a joke)

Talk about irrelevant article huh? why do they even put this up is beyond me...let me know the team that does like to roughed up?

It seems this season the Celtics are looked at as Villains. About once a week there are stories of players calling Celts Bullies or Trash Talkers. On youtube there are a few videos showing KG "picking on" scrubs or "backing down to tougher players". But you know, I could care less. If we are considered the Bad Guys, lets be the best Bad Guys out there. We have the title, come and get it Suckas.

I don't think it's a question of not liking to be hit. I think it's a question of where hitting is a foul and it's not called that the C's don't like. Ray was constantly held and his progress impeded when he tried to cut. Ray got hit by Oden on a "dirty" foul. (this may have happened in another game). Ray didn't like that, nor should he. I don't think in the Portland game we got rattled by the hits, but I do think we let the poor officiating get to us. Perk didn't complain about the pounding he took from Oden. That was within the line.

He's right

To some extent, I think this goes for most teams.  Reading this stuff brought me back to high school - playing for one of the smallest teams in the conference, coaches preached to us time and again that the most important thing to do against some of the bigger, chattier teams was to get a couple of real good hits on them right away.  Not dirty stuff - just planting real hard on a box out, initiating the contact on both ends of the floor, getting our money's worth on fouls.  When you do that, when you show a supposedly stronger team that you're not afraid of them, it tends to reduce a lot of the barking and the over-the-top physical stuff from their end.  It seems natural that once someone knows what they dish out is coming back at them, they aren't going to be quite as keen to dish it out with so much abandon.

I'm not saying this is true *all* the time or that it's especially applicable to the Celtics - and frankly, my team didn't find it out often enough because we *were* soft as a unit and did get intimidated a bit too easily too often - but I think the gist of Outlaw's commentary is understandable from a general standpoint.

A considerably more succinct way of saying what I attempted to above.  Well done, crownsy.   ;D

You know, I just reread the actual comments, and they seem incredibly mild, and it sounds like they were prompted by a direct question (like "it seemed like you guys went out trying to be more physical, was this part of the gameplan?").  I really don't see any problem with those comments, and I am pretty sure the C's would agree with them...and they will just work harder at being the aggressor (which they simply have not been during this road trip).
