It boggles my mind how many people think he is a slam dunk HOFer. Even more ridiculous is how people think he belongs on the list of top 5 PGs of all-time (I'd take Magic, Isiah, Cousy, Stockton and Kidd over him).

Steve Nash has been a very good (offensive) player with four great years mixed in. Sure, he's a great shooter and playmaker. Yet I think everyone was fooled because we hadn't seen a true point guard who can shoot in a long time. Now that CP3 and Deron Williams are around (and maybe Rondo in a few years  ;)), Nash's play over the last few years doesn't seem as hot as it used to.

I think he'll make the HOF, but I wouldn't vote for him on the first few ballots. He never won a championship. His stats were inflated in the D'Antoni system. His defense is less than desirable. Yet he had a few great seasons and that combined with a very good career is enough to get you into the basketball HOF.

So, what do you think? Is Steve Nash a HOFer?

Probably, since he won 2 MVP's.

It isn't a sure lock, however.

he had pretty good stats when he was playing for the mavs too.  I think he will eventually make it in the hall of fame.

There's a good, but rather old article about your question.

Personally I think he'll get into the HOF, because he's one of  10 or so players that have one two MVP awards, plus he is one of the better PG's currently.  All time I don't think he cracks the top 10 but he's had a solid career, and the MVP's will most likely get him in alone.

I'm pretty sure that every eligible player who has won an MVP award has made the HOF.  Nash will get in, even if his career numbers don't ultimately stack up.

I don't know how this is even a discussion. I hate Nash, but come on... what this guy has done is quite spectacular, plus he brought the focus back to the PG position as a playmaker; at the time the league was falling in love with the combo guards. At least that was my impression.

T-Mac and VC? Sorry but neither player has done anything throughout there careers to make the Hall of Fame. At various points in their careers (T-Mac more so that VC) they've looked fantastic, but injuries/attitude problems/lack of success should keep them from getting in.

The question being posed is if a two-time MVP will make the Hall of Fame in a sport where every single one-time MVP eligible for election is in the Hall? Sorry, but Nash is a sure fire, guaranteed, no question about it Hall of Famer. So is Kobe, KG, Duncan, Dirk and any other former league MVP that is still playing or not yet eligible for election. It's just the way this HOF works. And in a sport where only five players are ever on the court at when time, not 6, not 9, not 11, just 5, I think that's a pretty decent philosophy.

It isn't a sure lock, however.

2 MVPs speak very loudly.  He also will almost certainly in the top 10 in career assists, and likely top 8 (he is about 1000 away).

I agree that he may not completely deserve it, because he didnt really deserve both MVPs, but they will likely assure him a spot in the Hall, and likely first ballot.

I think people also under rate how good he was in Dallas. He'll get in and deserve it.

I'm pretty sure that every eligible player who has won an MVP award has made the HOF.  Nash will get in, even if his career numbers don't ultimately stack up.

That's the part that is unsettling to me. In baseball, the career is the focus, not individual seasons. Otherwise, Roger Maris and Dale Murphy would be in the HOF. In basketball, all you need is a good career with a few stellar seasons? If Nash wasn't traded to a high-octane offensive team, he wouldn't even be considered. He was a marginal all-star at best.

And we can debate whether he should have won those MVP trophies over the likes of Duncan, Lebron and Kobe. He was definitely the MVP of the Suns, but they didn't win a championship and their style of play inflated his stats. If he averaged 14 and 9.5, I don't think he would've won.
