Powe couldn't start over Craig Smith?

Good point.  But we all know that when all is said and done, Love is going to be starting next to Jefferson...and I don't think Powe is as good as Love.

Rondo is growing into an All-Star that can be the man on a bad to average team, but the side kick on a title team.

Perkins is growing into a fringe All-Star Center (based on defense and rebounding).

Powe is growing into a solid to good PF off the bench.

The rest, still big ? marks.  Just haven't seen.

Celtics have pieces to put around top stars.  They just don't have the young players that will become those stars.

if in four years the celtics starting five is rondo, perk, powe, walker, and tony allen danny ainge should save time and book his hotel room for the lottery early.

BB mentions that this group cant shoot, but understates it. as a defense, i would sag off rondo and probably allen. make them prove they can make jump shots night in and night out. right now, they cant. and i doubt they will ever be known as sharpshooters in their careers.

rondo and allen's scoring would drop ldramatically if they couldnt drive to the basket. and without shooters to spread the floor defenses will sag and make drives to the basket much more difficult.

walker? we really dont know yet what he can do so i dont think it is fair to put him in the "he can shoot" category yet.

what of powe and perk? pack the lane with defenders who dont have to guard great outside shooters and watch how often they block powe's shots, which happens already pretty often. as for perk, yeah, were i the other teams i would love to let him try to create his own shot game after game.

i like perk a lot, but i dont think he can consistently handle a double team or has that many moves that he can dazzle defenders and score regularly.

the starting five suggested above would have real troubles on offense and get beaten consistently i think.

now then, if you are saying that powe, walker, allen and maybe giddens are BENCH players...then i think you have an argument for what a good bench the celtics will have.

let's face it. even with the scoring brilliance of KG, ray allen, and paul pierce the celtics did not cake walk through the playoffs last year. it took all three stars to help take pressure off one another AND the rest of the team to do it.

it seems to me that the best hope for the celtics future lies in ainge's stated willingness to unload aging vets when their time is up and retool. (ala his bird and mchale statement.)

be it with free agents that the team can afford when allen et al leave....

or trading expiring salaries for younger players or draft picks....

or using the young celtic talent to make bigger deals happen...

the current non-big-three roster of the celtics is unlikely to deliver very satisfying basketball, let along championships.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

  • 36 charges and counting..
Rondo - All Star
Perkins - Border line probably not
Powe - Backup on a good team and starter for bad team.
TA - See Powe
BBD - Backup
Walker/Giddens - Who knows

There's some really good talent and some unknowns that may turn out to be good.  But like the OP stated they are set up pretty well with the contracts to retool in a few years. The future is bright the present is brighter.

Well, I think there are a variety of options. It's looking pretty obvious that Rajon is going to be our point guard for a long, long time.

The big 3's contracts are going to be good trading pieces. If some of these youngsters show the flashes of Al Jeff, Gerald Green, Gomes, etc. it is possible that they will be able to turn them over into a star player.

Look at what the Lakers gave up for Gasol last year. Bynum's expiring and Crittendon. That's all you need sometimes to get a treasure.

I will say this. Perkins is a solid, solid player and has one of, if not the absolute best non-rookie contracts in the league. I'd love to see Powe get more confidence in his pop J and he would become a lot more lethal. Gabe has shown flashes of having the skillset to be a part of most NBA rotations. I feel like there are some teams that would kill to have a player like Gabe in their rotation. Gabe could score 12 ppg w/New York or GS.

Agree, add in Pruitt, good combo guard off the bench at the least. POB young who knows.
Now look at our list of who we gave up (off the roster mind you)
Gerald Green-europe bound
DWest-starter for cleveland, sub for us on this team without a doubt
Gomes-see above
Al-future all star
So we gave up DWest, he's been replaced, we gave up Gomes, same.  Al is a future all star but i think perk is going to be very valuable to this team for hopefully 10 years.
