I tried it on Trade Machine and it didn't fly.  Miami would need to get some "filler". http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=831~2419&teams=14~14&te=&cash=.

If that filler is a decent draft pick or a serviceable young player, then this trade works for Miami.  This is a decent trade both ways and probably does make Cleveland better.  I am already worried about them but this trade doesn't change it all that much in terms of how they match up with Celtics.

Anything to get rid of Varejeo... Get rid of the Cav's best offensive rebounder, I can deal with that. Makes the cav's much easier to deal with height wise aswell.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
marion and d. wade have made the heat an unstoppable force... ::)

if cleveland does this deal they are simply grasping at straws.  they are then one ilgauskas injury away mediocrity.

I agree with most when they say it will not help the Cav significantly but watch the media somehow blow this up to 'Cavs are better then Boston now' LOL  ::)

I am just curious what players are any of you afraid of the Cavs picking up?  I am amazed that so many people are not afraid of Marion.

In playoffs, the name of the game is defense.

This is why Shawn Marion doesn't scare me.

Mike Brown knows defense.  Ferry needs to bring guys in who will buy into his teachings.  I don't think it would hurt the Cavs if they were to aquire another swing man, but not one who only plays on one side of the court and demands starter minutes.

Since when is Marion a bad defender!?

Well, I think the trade is Wally+Varejao for Marion; not Wally+Varejao for nothing, as you tried it.

Yeah that confused me too.  Marion has been one of the best defenders in the NBA for his entire career.  He can defend 3 positions (SG-PF), and despite the fact that he desires to be "the man", he has always been a tremendous team player when actually on the floor.

This is a good trade for both teams.

Marion is a good defender and a good rebounder, he gets 9.6 rebounds per 40 minutes. With him in the line-up, playing at the wings alongside LeBron, Cleveland would be an extremely strong defensive and rebounding team. The prospect of having to match-up Ray and Tony Allen with one of these guys is not nice at all.

I'm not worried about him going to the Cavs. The Cavs lose a great complimentary player who hustles the most out of that team, plays good D, and rebounds. They also lose Wally who even though is slow as hell, can space out the floor for Bron Bron. Sure Marion can and probably will play the 4, but does he matchup that well against KG? Dont think so. Does KG have to be particulary worried about sagging off of Marion to help on D? NOPE. He is a decent shooter, but has ugly form and is streaky.

I definitely think this trade makes the Cavs better in the short term, but come playoff time their fans will be crying in the stands with their Andy Afro's on their laps. I think this trade is more to appeal to Lebron. In his mind he figures hey, we have another star on the team, but the rest of the league knows Marions best days are behind him.

P.S. I would be more worried about the Lakers trading Odom for Marion. but thats another story.

Why are people assuming that Marion will play mostly at the 4? I bet that if this trade goes through, he'll spend most of the time pairing with LeBron at the wings. (even though Marion is a pretty effective player at the 4).

PG: Williams
SG: Lebron
SF: Marion
PF: Wallace
C: Z

Cleveland could go with a lineup like this against us, i would imagine that Lebron is fast and athletic enough to guard a smaller Ray Allen. Wallace is the only guy on their team that wouldnt pose an offensive threat.  Perk has had a hard time with Z in the past, and Wallace has been able to hold his own on Garnett before.  I feel like the relief you guys are referring to on one side of the ball with Varejao leaving comes back to bite us twice as much on the other end of the floor....and Shawn Marion is a great player, yes having Nash was nice, but I do believe that man was an All-Star before Nash arrived.

I like the all the positive feelings and confidence from fellow Celtic fans on here, but honestly, i dont understand how this doesnt scare the hech out of you guys.

I think they will play him at the 4 down the stretch of games, because (much like the Celtics last year with Posey), they Cavs don't have many guys up front who are two-way players, and in crunchtime, that is crucial.

Marion isn't as effective as a SF as he is as a PF. He also tends to disapper in the play-offs. I also don't see Cleveland playing Lebron at the 2.

If they play him at the 3, why wouldn't they play him at the 2? It's the exact same position. He already defends SGs, so there's no difference at all.
