I'm gonna be getting myself a phone tomorrow (with my own plan), and I figured I'd make a thread here asking for some advice on certain phones and plans.

I'm definitely getting Verizon, so if all you Verizon people could help me out that'd be great.

A large problem with the Verizon phones is that they tend to be running on old hardware. The Verizon phones tend to use an older processor and wrap a new shell around it. To analogize it to a car, it would be like keeping the same old engine for 20-30 years and just updating the body every year. Their best phones (from a hardware perspective) are the Verizon branded (orignally HTC) PDA phones such as the XV6800 and the XV6900.

I would be careful about getting one of the newly hyped Samsung and/or LG phones because they are underpowered and will be more expensive than they are worth.

Note: The above assumes you are looking for a smartphone/multimedia type device. If you are looking for a regular phone with minimal features, buy the cheapest one with the best battery life.

definitely depends what you are looking for.

PDA?  blackberry?  flip phone? etc...

if you are looking for a blackberry type phone, Walmart has the blackberry bold (new blackberry, but not the storm which is touch screen) essentially for free.  I think it is like $200, but they give you a rebate for $200.

Get a Blackberry. I have an iPhone now but had a Blackberry for a couple years and absolutely loved it.

I'm not looking for anything like that. Nothing too expensive. I want something like this:

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4226

In fact after looking, I think I might get that for myself tomorrow.

What?

means that i am a cel phone slave.
I actually use 3 cell phones
one radio phone, one blackberry tipe and one standar phone for 4 different activities
and after 2 years of that i feel like a slave of the phones over a cell phone user
its fun to have a nice phone with nice features its not fun when the phone rules your life

I know thats not your case and youre just asking about models here in order to get one good one
but its an advice to everybody not necesarily you.

Alright I ended up getting that LG VX5500, and I love it. Just a nice little phone, and I got a decent plan with it as well.

    * 450 minutes - $39.99/month

    * 500 messages (text/picture/etc.) - $10/month (but i have unlimited Verizon-to-Verizon texts, which is great since most of my friends and my brothers have Verizon)

    * Protection thing, where my phone gets replaced overnight if anything happens to it - $5/month

    * 2-year contract

So not bad. Pretty basic, but that's all I really need. It's good to finally have a phone again.
