He played basketball at University of Minnesota, so maybe a Midwest team?  Team tended to draft a lot of regional players back then.  Detroit Pistons?

Winfield was drafted in the NBA and ABA (also by a minor league hockey team as a publicity stunt).  But grrr, the teams are aluding me at the moment, was it Virgina Squires and Atlanta Hawks?

Another hint- He was a great college basketball player in the early 70's. And a pro basketball team coached by Bill Sharman drafted him.
