From spending a lot of time on this blog, it's become clear that certain posters have their "binkies", while other players consistently draw the scorn of certain members.  I was curious to see how candid people would be about their irrational support / criticism of certain players.

I'll go first:

Binkies:

Ray Allen -- I'm defensive of Ray, because I think he's a lot better than people give him credit for.  He's a star-quality player who has taken a backseat for the good of the team.  He also has a beautiful stroke to watch.

Leon Powe -- I love the way he hustles, and the way he's consistently and constantly produced when in the game.  It doesn't hurt that certain people used to downplay Powe's contribution to boost BBD's.

I of course love the rest of the starters, and most of the other players, as well.  (At times, Eddie House approaches binky-status, because I like him more than his production warrants.)

Guys that get under my skin
:

Tony Allen -- Candidly, I don't like his semi-thuggish background, and his mental mistakes on the floor irritate the heck out of me.  Tony is a poor decision maker, and I just don't like the way he plays the game.  I fully recognize that at his best, he is very good, and his teammates like him.  Still, he rubs me the wrong way.

Big Baby -- BBD draws my scorn mostly because he's vastly overrated.  He's not a very good player, and yet people constantly talk about his "potential".  The guy has done very little to get in shape after his pre-draft workouts, and hasn't been very productive at the NBA level yet.  I think part of my hard feelings towards him are because I chose Powe in the "Leon vs. Baby" debate, and BBD's supporters made me like him less than I should.

Patrick O'Bryant -- I'm not a huge fan of Paddy O'Blount, mostly because I see him as a waste of talent.  The guy reminds me of Blount, minus the gum chewing.  I'd like to see the guy improve, but he just doesn't seem to hustle or care about playing very much.

To be clear, I support all of the above guys because they're Celtics.  When they do well, I cheer them.  However, when they screw up, I'm probably harder on them than I am other players.

So, those are my biases.  Anybody else?

Binkies - big fans of most our guys - especially Pierce. I can honestly say that - it's a very likable team overall. I suppose TA is a favorite in comparison to some - only because he gets so unfairly maligned.

Guys that bug me:

Big Baby Davis. I don't like people that can't even control their diet when they are getting paid too. It's just a sign of poor character. Plus honestly he just plain isn't that good.

Scalabrine. I dont' want to hear about intangibles. He is a bad NBA player right now - vying with BBD for the worst on the team. Yes worse then Giddens/Walker who would be able to do SOME postive things if they got minutes.

Cassell. He was incredibly selfish last year. That kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

Well, since its honesty day..... ;)

Binky's

Paul Pierce- Pierce could be throwing up 30 air balls a Game and i'd still defend him. He was "my" celtic. I grew up in a family with 4 uncles, 2 of whom were huge Celtics fans in the 80's, while I was a tot. I was around 14 when pierce got drafted, and he became my Celtic. When my uncle's complained the new players and teams sucked, i argued against all rationality that Pierce would drag us to a championship. When they said he was awful, I said he’d have his number in the rafters someday.

And, I got to watch him grow up as i grew up. I watched him go from an arrogant, somewhat selfish young scorer into a mature, team leading veteran who only wanted a few players so he could prove how great he was.

Him winning the Finals MVP was one of my highlights as a Boston sports fan. as Simmons said " How many great players stay on crappy teams, through possible FA stints, and then win it?"

Perk- I love the effort Perk brings every night. Yes, he can be a knucklehead, but he is a tough son of a gun who plays his heart out and stays within his role. I love his toughness and intensity, and the fire he brings to every game. The big fella is sure fun to watch.

Rajon- I'm a huge fan of the Defensive oriented, set up point gaurd, and Rondo is made for that style of play. I'd love him to be able to shoot like CP3, but I love the way he plays, all out, 100% on every loose ball/ drive. He's also fearless around the basket.

Players I just can't get the appeal of

Scal- yes, yes, i know. intangables and good defender. I'm sorry, i just don't see it. Scal looks awkward, plays outside himself on offense, and can't shoot. I cringe every minute scal is on the floor, and am constantly amazed by average plays he makes.

I am not a Scal Fan.

You already summed up BBD, so i'll skip him.

Donny Marshall- I just can't stand his bland commentary. It's awful. Add into that his lame stories about how he's played with evry player ever and thier good friends, and i just can't stand it. He was bad enough in the studio, now he's intolerable.

those are mine, rationaly or irrationaly :D

Binkies:
Sam Cassell...this goes back to way before he became a Celtic and made it extra painful to watch him brick it up during the playoffs last year.

Powe...Powe Power!  How can you not root for the guy

Buggers:
Tony Allen...I've tried so hard to let Tony's shortcomings go unnoticed knowing that there is a spectacular equalizer just around the bend somewhere, but it's become impossible to not separate the two.  The bonehead moves are just so [dang]ed boneheaded it pains me to watch.
Yup

Binkies
1.Eddie House is probably my favorite player that i will probably go to bat for more than others even when he is having an off game.I have followed House's career somewhat over a few season prior to him coming to the Celtics and felt he never found the right team who knew how to use his skills the right way until he joined the Celtics. He stayed positive even through some what seemed tough years and for that he is now being rewarded for his dedication, skills, and being a team player no matter where he lands.I guess i root for the underdog a lot.

I do not think im aganist any 1 player but i do not see what a lot of people see in Tony Allen.I am not a Tony hater but i admit when they were close to trading him i was not a sad spectator.

Binkies:
Celtics: I'm excluding the big three because I don't think they should count as Binkies. All-Stars on your favorite teams are above binky status for me.

Rondo: My favorite player on the Celtics, in large part because I called him being good halfway through 2006-2007 season. The team just seemed to play better when he was out there instead of Bassy. It's nice to be right.

Perk: It's fun to root for the slowest guy on the floor, just so long as he's the meanest. He is the perfect compliment for KG.

Baby: I root for Baby because it has to be rough being side by side with a player with not only a similar skill set ( Hustle player+ Good Offensive rebounder+ Good inside finisher+ Plays taller than he is) in Leon, but a similar past and not get the recognition or playing time. http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?section=magazine&id=3636177&campaign=rsssrch&source=lsu+tigers

Around the NBA:

Chris Bosh: I love Bosh. Primarily because unless your name is Michael Jeffery Jordan you cannot win an NBA championship without a dominant C or PF. And if I was building a team to compete for the next ten years, there isn't a big man I'd chose over Bosh. He gives you 25 and 10 and is easier to build around than Dwight Howard. Also, that All Star Commercial was hysterical.

Shaq: "I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok."- 'nuff said.

Ok i lied Tony Allen drives me crazy...example,even though he hit a clutch jumper in the corner but he followed it up with dribbing the ball off his own foot not once but twice    ( right after each other). Its just an example of what the naysayers are looking at with this guy.Ive always felt Danny did not want to admit he made a mistake when he signed Tony and has tried to convince fans and others Tony is the next MJ.Tony has his upsides but i have felt we can do better out on the open market.

So, should I just go and put TA under the binky category for you, Steve?  You are his biggest fan.

Binky's

Powe - All out all the time just gets the the job done.  I'm pleasantly surprised that he seems to be even better around the basket this season.  Not sure he will ever do anymore than that with his limited athleticism.

Baby - I feel he contributes and couldn't careless what he weighs.  In fact I find it completely blown out of proportion but, that's pretty much the definition of a blog.  Plus he seems like such a good natured fun guy and I know it shouldn't matter but it does to me so I root for him.

TA - He can provide a spark both ways unfortunately. Not the brightest bulb but, he again seems like a pretty cool guy.

I fell lucky to be a fan of the current C's.  They all seem to be pretty good guys along with Doc.  They get along and have no problem pointing out issues they have with each other.

Yeah, that's me.  Proud sponsor of all things Tony Allen and all entities Oklahoma State University.  A mutual feeling, I suspect.

Binkies:

Paul Pierce:  Grown up with the guy.  Remember being psyched the day we drafted him and the pride I felt when he finally got recognition during the '02 ECF run.  He's been the one constant for me as a Celtics fan going back to high school through college to today.

Eddie House:  Love this guy.  Everytime he shoots from beyond the arc, I get a thrill waiting for it to go down.  I just love this guy.

Rajon Rondo:  Just a special kind of athlete.  One of the fastest players on the court that I've ever seen.  I love his intensity.  He's like a little brother.

Leon Powe:  Grown man.  I love the controlled physicality of his game.

Buggers

Tony Allen:  Do I even need to explain this one?

Perk:  The fouls bother me and STOP PUTTING THE BALL ON THE COURT when you're two feet from the hoop!!!  (However, beyond that, I still love him)

I look at the Celtics as like being a little brother.  I can pick on them and put them down, but the minute someone else does the same thing, I will defend them to the bitter end.  But for the most part, I always try to look at the good in the team (and players).
