Dump Cassell

I'll say what most of you are thinking. Cassell adds nothing to this team. It's time to dump him and give the playing time to Pruitt. Why does management think they owe something to Cassell? His playing days are behind him.

Which playing time do you refer to in particular?

because he's cheap, wants to coach for them afterwards, and from all accounts is a great teacher of younger PG's and a class teamate who doesn't groan about playing time while teaching youngsters. (see rondo, rajon and pruitt, gabe.)

plus with miles gone, why dump him?

The playing time minutes would be as backup point guard to Rondo. As far as Casell's coaching is concerned- that doesn't require him to be on the roster. I would much rather Pruitt gets a bunch of minutes during the regular season so he has some experience before the playoffs. Why keep putting off his development for a 39 year old retread.

It is curious that feel confident enough to pass judgment before a single regular season game has been played. For what we know, Pruitt might be backing up Rondo, and Cassell might end up playing 10 minutes per game.

what makes you think sam isn't one of the 3 non-dressed spots? right now id say one is scal, one is giddens to the NBDL, and the last one is walker to the NBDL or sam.

sam showed no ill will towards them last year for yanking his playing time around all playoffs, and according to rondo was a great teacher and teamate no matter what kind of time he was or wasen't getting. with him saying he wants to move to coaching, show me proof sam's not the guy in street clothes as the emergancy backup in case rondo, house, pruitt or TA gets hurt.

exactly. i'd be shocked if the "off the bench" gaurd order doesn't go house/TA then Pruitt then sam.

i think eddie would be quite shocked if it goes rondo---> cassell too

I don't think they think they owe him anything.  I think they are looking at him as insurance in case Pruitt and House are not able to hold down the backup PG spot.  At the same time, he is a valuable guy to have around because of his work with the young guys (I love watching him on the sidelines...he is constantly teaching, and not just the PG's, he is helping out everyone, and when he is not teaching, he is talking with Thibodeau, asking his opinion on things).

This team did not need to keep Miles on the Roster.  He looked nowhere near to returning.  If he comes back in December in better shape, and with some of his athleticism back, then they can look at opening up a spot for him, but for the moment, Cassell is more valuable to this team.

Sam was a good NBA PG last year before he came to Boston.   I do not think it is a forgone conclusion that he can not play closer to that level again this year in small spurts. 


Plus, he is the only other true PG on this team besides Rondo.  Both Rondo and Pruitt can learn alot from him.

Cassell to Pruitt: "Hey, if you want to have success and be one of the best point guards in the league for an extended period of time, just like good ol' Sam, you need to jack up shots all night an care less about your teammates than your step-back mid-range jumper. End of story. Good out there and have success."

As long as his ego doesn't get in the way I like having him in the locker room.  As does KG and the other veterans.  He's also good insurance in case Rondo (who has been somewhat injury prone and takes a lot of hard hits) or Pruitt go down for any amount of time.

First of all Sam did start complaining about his PT later in the year. Second of all he didn't have his PT yanked around like stated earlier on here, his terrible play forced Doc to sit him. Thirdly, as bad as I dislike Sam's me-first attitude, he hasn't gotten really any minutes in the preseason, and if he holds a clipboard all year he isn't really hurting us. If we lose a player and his spot is needed they will just cut him to add someone else and he becomes an official coach. Not really an issue unless they think they need to get the guy PT... If he starts seeing the floor it better be because of an injury to Rondo or Gabe.

my thoughts exactly. He's got good value on the sideline. The question for the upcoming season: Is Cassell a sideline mentor and insurance policy? ...or is a part of the rotation from the get go?

If he's here as in mentor role he can gracefully ascend to coaching next year but, unfortunately I'm very leery in regards to Doc playing Sam.  I mean how obvious was it that House should have been playing over Sam during last years playoffs?  He didn't finally make a move until late in Detroit series when it was obvious to anyone with a set of eyes that Sam was horrendous.  I've always stuck up for Doc because he was dealt a losing hand his first few years in Boston and he still got a very young team to play hard but, 39 year old PGs don't normally go from being bad to good.  When you hit the bad time it only gets worse.
