I think at this point the entire blog loves Perk. Here's 15 more reasons to love him:

1. Acie Earl
2. Eric Montross
3. Pervis Ellison
4. Alton Lister
5. Steve Hamer
6. Brett Szabo
7. Travis Knight
8. Andrew DeClerq
9. Zan Tabak
10. Eric Riley
11. Vitaly Potapenko
12. Mark Blount
13. Vin Baker
14. Raef LaFrentz
15. Chris Mihm

The above are all the centers that came before Perk, after Parish.

I'm giving Battie and Radja a pass as they were solid PFs who had to play center for a few seasons.

TP, Mr. Oct.  A good perspective that was simultaneously amusing and embittering to consider.

I found myself pouring over these centers after running into this page of past Celtic rosters. Its a fun little trip down memory lane.

This is of course no indictment against Alton Lister.  I'll get fightin' mad if anyone has a bad word about Alton! >:(

But yeh, tough list of talent and Perk is indeed the MAN!

Yup

Guess we now know why we went 22 years without an NBA Championship. Even including Radja and Battie, that has to be one of the most pathetic, long term lists of starting centers for a team in the league.

Think about it. Over the last 22 years name a team that didn't have a good center start for a year for them even once in that time.

Nets - Gminski
Knicks - Ewing
Raptors - Camby
76ers - Ratliff
Bucks - Sikma
Bulls - Chandler
Pistons - Lambeer
Cavs - Daugherty
Pacers - Smits, O'Neal
Hawks - Rollins
Bobcats - Okafor
Heat - Shaq
Magic - Shaq, Howard
Wizards - Malone
Clippers - Kaman
Sonics - ???, but Kemp did play some center
Lakers - Jabbar, Shaq
Trailblazers - Wallace
Suns - Stoudemire, Shaq
Nuggets - Camby
Jazz - Eaton
Spurs - Robinson
Rockets - Hakeem
Mavericks - Donaldson
Grizzlies - ??? but Gasol did play some center
Hornets - Mourning, Chandler
T-Wolves - ??? but Jefferson did play a lot of center last year
Kings - Divac
Warriors - ??? Carroll for maybe a year

Granted we had Parish in the late 80's and early 90's but after that. Wow that list astounds me.

I love Perk as much as anyone.  But I bet you could put half the people from that list alongside the Big 4 (yeah I said it) and we would still have won a chip.

Half of my list would have been rehabbing from an injury in any given May/June. Maybe a quarter would be in the D-League or Europe... that leaves:

Montross, Knight, Declerq, Potapenko and Blount.

Montross and Potapenko make Perk look like Allen Iverson speedwise.
Knight and Declerq would have been seriously outmatched size wise by Gasol, Sheed, etc.
Blount would have been stuffed in a dumpster by KG.

I'll still take Perk. Although I agree it is possible the other 4 players could have caried one of these dudes...

haha   OK but try putting Perk on one of those teams in place of a Declerq or Ellison or Raef and surround him with the players that those guys were surrounded with he won't look nearly as good.     I'm not tryin to hate on Perk.  I'm just sayin.....Perk is not THAT much better than a lot of those guys.  Raef would have been a good fit as the center on this team(when healthy of course).  And don't forget that Perk definitely has an injury history.

Most of our prior centers (sans Vitaly, when he's not being Greg Kite for the night) were soft. LaFrentz was an outsider shooter (ala Dirk Nowitzki) but less consistent; his time in the box was for his height and the fact that he wasn't a complete bozo like Blount.

Perkules is an enforcer and takes his job to heart. His foul trouble days were his first to third season but now, he can play that role w/o a hitch. Sure, he'll never be the rebounding title man like Big Ben, nor a daily 20 pt/ 10 rb guy, but so what? I'd rather a more humble man who can give both Pierce and KG some muscle to throw clowns like Bynum, Ilgauskas, or Gasol into the bleachers. And finally, he's got a nice finishing touch on the block when he gets an offensive rebound.

I personally liked Vitaly Potapenko.  He added interior toughness to a team that desperately needed it.

Vintage V would be a great backup on the current team!!

...I have sour memories because Pitino traded a lottery pick for him (I believe Shawn Marion was picked with it) and he wasn't quite good enough to be a starting center.

If V didn't hurt his knee in the meaningless last regular season game of the 2002 season, the Cs probably would have beaten the Nets that year and gone on to the NBA Finals.  he used to do a very good job mucjing things up in the.  Unfortunately, the Cs had onle Battie to deal with three burly Nets centers, MacCulloch, Collins and Aaron Williams.
