Who do you think is the best basketball player to come out of this area?
I am not talking about players who played at local colleges, but players that were raised in new england.

I say it's Marcus Camby

Barros had a pretty phenomenal high school career at Xaverian.

Ewing played high school ball in Cambridge, but I don't think of him as a Bostonian (I don't think he does either)
Yup

Since I never actually saw him play, I'm basing this on others' accounts; both media and non-media types. His life and playing career were marred by some issues but I heard that on the court, he was something special.

Marvin Barnes.

  • President of Jaylen Brown Fan Club
Patrick Ewing of Cambridge Ringe & Latin.
Marvin Barnes of Providence, Rhode Island.
Calvin Murphy of Norwalk, Connecticut
Rick Mahorn of Hartford, Connecticut.
or
Marcus Camby would be on my list.

Where exactly does Ewing stand on this?

He was born in Jamaica and spent most of his youth there.  Granted, he played his high school ball here but can you really consider him for this debate?

It's hands down Ewing.

Marvin Barnes and Ernie Di Gregorio were probably the best ive ever seen (born/raised in New England) play ...i followed their careers from high school thru their professional days.

If we're throwing women hoopsters into the mix Foxboro's Sarah Behn has to be mentioned.  She is the states 2nd All Time leading high school scorer (sadly missed 2 free throws at the end of her final game that would have won  the state championship and broken the record for either sex).  She went on to have a great career at BC.

Has to be Tommy and Cousy who both played at Holy Cross

Edit. they weren't originally from N.E

To be completely honest, its sort of embarrassing how little talent our region has produced, especially if you compare it to other regions of the country. Just being honest.

My pick would be Ewing if he's eligible. Otherwise I'll go with Dana Barros over Camby.

Just for fun, here's a list of other local guys I thought might make it bigger: Chris Herren, Wayne Turner, Billy Curley, and Rumeal Robinson.

Edit: OK, i just removed my name from the list before anyone responded with "Who the blank was that?"  :P

let's see... Dr. J was from NY - no dice
Camby was from CT, he works

How bout Vin Baker? Born in Fl, but played hs ball in CT, and is generally seen as a product of CT - had a great 1st half of his career, then umm got into the medicine cabinet...

A few others who were dominant at the HS level and had cups of coffee with the pros.... Rick Brunson, Scoonie Penn, Chris Herren

and of course the best 2 players I ever shared the court with: Sean Connolly (played at Providence then Ohio State) and Kevin Bettencourt (played on the Bucknell team that upset Duke)
