Death Proof by Quinten Tarrantino

You have to go rent this one.

Its rates very high on the un-intended comedy scale (kinda in the same way that Pulp Fiction makes you laugh - likely intended...), and its has some of the very best car-chase scenes I have ever witnessed.  Your heart will jump out of your chest multiple times.

Quinten goes old school with lots of 'record crackle' and other effects to set the tone, and brings in some really cool 70's era muscle cars.  Combine that with the token hot chicks terrorized by bad guy (classic performance by Kurt Russell) and a really cool soundtrack --- and you have a film that you will want to watch again and again.  Perfect film to throw on at a party.  Not very deep with plot, just great great film making and an intriguing course of events.

Go watch it, you won't be disapointed.

I think the intent of this threat was to name more obscure movies, so sorry, No Country for Old Men doesn't count...
Ok, I really liked "Fearless" with Jeff Bridges. He survives a plane crash and his behavior changes after that as he deals with guilt from his friends that died in the crash. Very good acting and story line.
I also just saw last week a great movie called "Boy A". A bit of a downer but you gotta love the British accents and the incredible story (based on a true story) of a child that commits a henous crime but is rehabilitated and tries to make it back to society...

Can a movie that won best picture be suprisingly good ?  The Mist was a suprisingly good movie, I thought it was going to stink, it had one of the greatest endings in a movie ever.

Cosign

Despite the really bad CGI, the story telling was exceptional. The ending was some twisted, Twilight Zone kinda stuff.

Plus, don't wanna give too much away, a certain character gets what's coming to them and it's great when it happens.

The Muppet Movie.
UH... which one?

Do you mean "the Muppet Movie", or...

The Great Muppet Caper,
The Muppet Take Manhattan
A Muppet Christmas Carol,
Muppet Treasure Island,

Or the original Muppet Movie?  Because I love them all.  All!

Requiem for a Dream and The Basketball Diaries are fantastic, powerful films.

TP. As do I. But "Caper" is definitely my favorite.

Man o man, Requiem for a Dream is a tough movie to watch.  So dark that even the nude scenes with Jennifer Connelly were a downer.

So True. Great comment, I just gave you a TP for something in another thread but a second one is on its way.

No Country for Old Men was the worst best picture I have seen in a long time.. It's not even a story.

For me a surprisingly good film was "Fight Club" perhaps because I thought it was a kung fu kind of no plot movie.. So it takes you by surprise. I think that's really key for surprisingly good - having no expecations. If you can just see a movie 'cold' without reading about the plot and reviews and such and it's good...

Probably if I read the book and the reviews about it I wouldn't like it that much.

Wow.  I could not disagree with you more on that.  No Country has a succinct but solid plot, but for me the performances turned in by Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem were what made the movie great.  And it was very well shot by the Cohen Brothers.

For those of you that are fans of the film, pick up the book.  It is a very easy read, and fairly short.  I saw the film first, then read the book.  What impressed me most is that the film is almost a sentence by sentence adaptation of the book.  That takes skill, to retell a story in a different medium without embellishing.

on a random note, my little brothers and sister (im significantly older than them, mom remarried) hate muppet christmas carol. why you ask?

because when i get tapped to baby sit anytime near the holidays, its going on. typical december babysitting movie decideing;

"can we watch a christmas movie"

Me: sure. Go get the muppet christmas carol

"we want to see the wiggles christmas special!"

me: that's nice. so go get the muppets.

"Why do we have to watch what you want?"

Me: well, im bigger than you. i can beat you up. (this generaly leads to my brothers tackling me, and me re-establsing my older brother domanice through tickling.)
