Yes he does have a history of having a bad attitude, but so did quite a few players who played under George Karl for some reason !

Again, I reference you to his New Orleans/OKC days previously, where he wasn't exactly known as a choirboy either.  Problems persisted particularly between him and Byron Scott.

Just a suggestion to proceed with caution with certain loaded phrasing...

I think this is pretty much on point. Didn't Smith cause a car accident that killed one of his buddies that was with him? Has been a problem where ever he has been. Maybe he just young and dumb.

Kids got talent and can play, but might not be worth the headeahe.

I realize there is another thread similar to this one about 20 threads down, but for some reason my computer will not allow me to open that thread, so here is my immeasurably valuable contribution (read: sarcasm....kinda....nevermind, just read it. I'm awkward.).

This is from Chad Ford's list of the top remaining free agents. Smith is 4th on the list:

4. J.R. Smith, Nuggets*: Smith's sharpshooting skills are in high demand, but he's been labeled a difficult player, which has hurt his stock around the league. Right now he'd settle for a midlevel deal. At this point, I'm not sure the Nuggets, in cost-cutting mode, would match. -Chad Ford

This makes Smith tantalizing, since he is an excellent shooter, regardless of his attitude problems. I can't explain why, other than the cliche "being around PGA and Doc will shape him up" explanation, but I just don't think he will be a problem. It sounds like we can get him for the MLE.... and he's young and athletic...... just sayin'.

Also, he can fill at least 1 of the holes left by Posey's absence, not to mention it would be the one that Danny considered to be the most valuable aspect of Posey's game, namely, outside shooting. He also has good size, and I think he can be taught good defensive rotation and turn his currently sub-par D into, maybe not a strength, but certainly into a part of his game that does not constitute a weakness. I watched an awful lot of JR Smith when he was in highschool, and a couple times during practice. When his coach called him over to talk about anything, JR would bend his head down, and try to absorb every word. He wants to improve and be a great player.

Now, I don't think its likely that he'll be making any all-star teams, but still, from what I saw of him in an intimate setting, albeit during high school, before he was tainted by Denver's "leadership" and gobs of cash, he was a hungry, improvement-oriented player... I think Doc and Thibs, along with PGA and just the Celtic lore can reawaken that in him.

P.S.
For what its worth, he's not a dumb kid. Solid grades all throughout high school.... He is mentally capable of grasping a complicated defensive scheme, unlike Gerald Green.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I don't see it happen because he's not a small forward, he's doesn't play defense, and isn't the veteran type we'd want. Basically he doesn't fit a need. We have Ray, Tony, and Giddens who play the two guard position, he's not needed. I'd like to have him, but not at the cost of our last roster spot (if we sign the rooks).

JR Smith is a super offensive talent
That's a common misconception. He has very poor shot selection and a very inconsistent jump shot. He does do a solid job slashing to the basket, but I'd call him anything but "super."

Now is not the time. The C's should wait to see how TA and Giddens work out, then if necessary make some kind of move at the deadline.

Besides, I'd be more concerned about signing a good 3 right now. I think there is already plenty of depth at the 2.

Like I said, JR Smith is a super talent , what you may call a bad shot for most is actually a very common shot for a player who has his kind of talent.
There are so many talented offensive players in the NBA who couldn't make some of the shots that Kobe, Iverson. LB James along with a few others and for others to attempt those shots is like shooting turn overs, however JR Smith is one of those talents that could make some nearly impossible looking shots and not think twice about it.
Every player takes bad shots at some time during the course of a game and Pierce is a noted player for such shots, none the less he's a good player !

chemistry?

JR Smith has indeed a lot of talent. But does he fits our team needs and personality?

He is a little bit a crazy bone head that plays often a "me first" kind of basketball. He can do a lot of spectacular stuff, beeing able to score a lot of points in some games when he takes control. Remind you of Ricky Davis? JR Smith has not been renowned for his defence or to contribute for a good team spirit.

Have you already forgot what made our team so special last year? Have you already forgot how all the 15 guys were all available to contribute to a team effort, regardless of the minutes they played (if they even did) or the shots they were allowed to take? Have you forgot how each of them were willing to sacrifice themselves on defence? Chemistry is the key and JR Smith is not a good option for that.

We need a SF, not one more guard.

If I'm not mistaken J.R. Smith is still out there correct? He would be a nice young player to come off the bench for the MLE.. and with the financial situation Denver is in I believe they can't match that can they.. Just wondering love to hear you thoughts

I believe in giving people chances in life and JR needs his chance in life too.  I would think of him as a very good acquisition for us especially for the fact that we have 3 veteran players (and a good core of no nonsense players) who can get out of JR what is needed for him to realize what being a famous basketball player is all about.  Yes, please!
In Danny Ainge I Trust!

Let's not overrate Smith here - interesting player, some advantages as a slasher, but a horrific, lazy defender. He wouldn't hurt what we have left of a bench, and he might actually decide to put out some effort on the defensive end with the starters as an example.

Steve has the assessment right, as usual. Interesting idea, but we don't have the full MLE and his character is most assuredly at issue here.

Ok I don't understand where you are getting at saying he isn't that great he averaged 18.3 PPG in the playoffs and a steal a game in the regular season and playoffs.. and I'm almost positive he could play good D as a SF he is 6:6 with good length and jumping ability, if he came here i think KG would be able to get a hold of him and straighten him out. O also he averaged those 18 PPG in just 27MPG. I think he really could replace posey offensive ability and a little bit on D but Tony Allen could fill the rest of that defensive role
