Bassy was one of the best point guards left on the market. Good to see him get a contract.
Not sure Minny is the best place for him. I was hoping Toronto would sign him to backup Calderon. Telfair is going to have to turn himself into a high level shooter and defender to earn that job long term in Minnesota. I'm thinking we'll see him get traded before his contract ends.
Well Toronto just brought over Roko Ukic, who they drafted in I believe 2005, and signed him to a 3-year deal.
But I do think Telfair is a good fit in Minnesota for the simple fact that he is their only pass-first point guard. I'll take that a step further... he's their only point guard period. I also think that Minnesota is looking to become more of an up-tempo team (which McHale eluded to in an interview, saying that Love's outlet passing will benefit that movement), and that's right up Bassy's alley.
I'm glad he's getting an opportunity, and I hope he continues to make the best of it.
Yeah I don't know anything about Ukic. I don't think I've ever seen him play, or at least I've never realized I was watching a game that he was playing in. Toronto run a nice point guard dominated offense which allows their guard to create off the dribble on a lot of high screen and rolls, a player like Telfair would be a nice fit there. Ukic's agent said, after he signed, that Ukic would have a similar opportunity as Calderon to play minutes right away and be the backup guard so Toronto are planning to use him right away.
Telfair is a good fit for Minnesota for 12 more months. Is he a good fit beyond that? Doubtful. Next player coming in (with their next high lottery pick) will almost definitely be a perimeter player and likely a guard. If it's a talented wing they acquire there's a good chance Foye gets the point over Telfair. It'll be interesting to see just how long his multi-year contract is but I do think there's a good chance he gets moved before finishing that deal. Telfair has been solid for them but not a standout, he just isn't a great fit skill wise or talented enough to make up for it.
