Pierce To Knicks: Dump Marbury

Jul 11, 2008 4:18 AM EST

Celtics star Paul Pierce believes that the New York Knicks needs to part ways with guard Stephon Marbury before they can truly start to get better, the New York Daily News are reporting.

"He makes the biggest contract and he's one of the oldest players on the team," Pierce said yesterday. "That doesn't really fit into a rebuilding plan, just to be honest."

"I'd try to trade him or buy him out at this point," added Pierce, who still believes Marbury can be a starting point guard in the NBA. "I just think he needs a fresh start somewhere else. Marbury needs to be on a veteran team where he fits into what they're trying to do a little bit more."

I am a bit surprised.
"If somebody would have told you when he was playing with the Knicks that Nate Robinson was going to change a big time game and he was going to do it mostly because of his defense, somebody would have got slapped."  Mark Jackson

I don't know if he wants him here, but he wants him out of NY.

I am just hopeful that the Celtics know better then to want him.

How does that equate to Pierce wanting Marbury here?

Clearly the Celtics are a veteran team, but he in no way shape or form fits into what the Celtics are trying to do.

The C's are about team first, individual second, defense first let the offense flow from the defense. If ever there was a team who's philosophies could be the complete opposite of everything Marbury stands for, it is the Celtics.

I think he was referring to going to the Lakers. That sounds more like Marbury's type of team.

Well, Marbury certainly doesn't "fit into what [we're] trying to do".

I think Paul was just candidly answering a question.  I don't think he was lobbying for Starbury to join the Celts.

I didn't say he wanted Marbury here.  Did you read the heading?.. it was in the form of a question.  The last sentence I highlighted, that he should be with a veteran team, made me think that it is possible that he might want to try to lure Marbury here.  I thought it strange that he would even comment on what the Knicks should do with Marbury.

Speaking of which how does Pat Riley not make this trade with the Knicks?

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=70~510~990~509&teams=18~18~14~14&te=&cash=

Shawn Marion and Mark Blount for

Eddy Curry for Stephon Marbury.

The Knicks dump two players and contracts they don't want plus they get a backup center and Shawn Marion the protype PF (Unlike Amare Stoudamire) for Dantoni's system.

Whereas Riles gets the PG he wants (and a big expiring contract) to pair with Wade while Chalmers comes along and the post player he desperately wants.  This is a win-win if I've ever seen it?!!!

I think Riley gets the PG he doesn't want in that trade.

Way to surround Beasley with players you do not want him to learn from.

Way to frustrate Wade.

Curry and Marbury are two players with negative trade value.  The Heat can do better for Marion (who is a large expiring contract in his own right).

If the Heat want Marbury, they can wait a few weeks and sign him as a free agent, after he's bought out.

Bankshot what I was trying to say, and maybe you took it the wrong way, was how would Pierce's innocuous comment about the type of team Marbury should be going to could be interpretted as his wanting him here as your question(yes I knew it was a question) asked.

I never said that you said Pierce wanted him here. I merely pointed out that the Celtics aren't the type of team that Marbury would fit into and that maybe Pierce was talking about another team, like the Lakers.

Wallace would insist on giving Wade to NY as well.

And let's not forget the unprotected first round draft pick as well.
