Here are The Maniac's most wanted free agent scenarios

1. Let Posey go and try to replace him with Andre Iguodala, Eduardo Najera or (wait for it...) Ron Artest!!! Then bring in Carlos Arroyo or Jannero Pargo to back up Rondo and add Kurt Thomas to be the new P.J. Brown.

2. Re-sign Posey and make a run at Delonte West (restricted free agent) for the back up PG/SG job (go after Duhon, Arroyo, Pargo or Udrih if the Cavs lock him up – which they need to). Sign Jamaal Magloire or K.Thomas to back up the bigs.

3. Let Posey go and go after Emeka Okafor to be your go-to big off the bench (still like the idea of Perk starting at C and Ok4 spelling him and KG). Najera could be the swingman off the bench and Arroyo or Pargo etc. spell Rondo.

4. Let Posey go and try desperately to lure Josh Smith from the Hawks (he’s a restricted fee agent). Give Dikembe Mutumbo or a draft pick a shot at the other frontcourt reserve. Sign whichever competent backup point guard is available.

Obviously, we probably won't get any of these scenarios unless the owners decide to say "SCREW IT!! LET'S BUILD A  JUGGERNAUT!!!" and go skyrocketing above the salary cap, which, by the way, they have no reason not to do. THINK how much money they made through that playoff run and as a result of winning the championship. Think of all the advertising dollars, merchandise, season ticket sales for next year and beyond etc. How in the heck could they NOT have covered the luxury tax by light years? The Red Sox and Patriots spare no expense when it comes to winning. The Celtics must continue to do the same.

My dream.

Posey and House resign with out using the MLE

Diop and Duhan for a split MLE.

TA and the 1st used to trade up and get Rush.

Take a flyer on O'Bryant if you can sing him for a minimal contract.

PG Rondo    Duhan   (House)   Pruitt
SG Ray      House   Rush
SF Pierce   Posey   Scali
PF KG       Powe    Davis
C  Perk     Diop    O'Bryant

wdleehi, whaddya know about O'Bryant.  All I've heard says he's got talent but couldn't get a shot at Golden State.  Do you think he could be productive on this team?

celticsmaniac, the problem with your scenarios is not the willingness of the owners to spend (or the luxury tax threshold) but the salary cap.

Even if we let Posey go (or resign him with the non-Bird exception), we can only add a $5.8M player (or several players for that value), a $1.7M player and minimum salary players. I can't see how can we sign Okafor, Najera and Pargo with these assets.

wdleehi, I like yours, but:
- we can't use Tony Allen to move up
- I wouldn't want O'Bryant
- I don't believe we can get Diop and Duhon splitting the MLE, but okay, that's why we are talking about dream scenarios ;D

Here's mine:

Posey and House resign without using the MLE

Diop - MLE
Carter - LLE
CDR unexpectedly falls
PJ comes back for the min.

Rondo/Carter/House/Pruitt
Allen/House/CDR
Pierce/Posey/CDR/Scal
Garnett/Posey/Powe/BBD/Scal
Perkins/Diop/PJ Brown

I know he is a legitimate NBA sized C that played for Nelson who loves his Nellie ball.  I don't know how much of a shot he ever really got to develop.  I doubt they spent a lot of time working on the things he needed to work on.

Plus, at the minimal, if he doesn't work out, he should be easy enough to get rid of.

Saw O'Bryant several times in person and live in college - and I CANNOT STAND the guy's game.

He is Mark Blount minus the effort - as disinterested a big guy as you'd ever want to see. His problem isn't Nelson. It's his own pathological lack of effort.

O'Bryant should be avoided at ALL costs. No interest here whatsoever.

Dream scenario?

Resign House and Posey without using the MLE.

Sign Jamison with the MLE to come off the bench.

Sign Jeff Foster with the bi-annual exception.

Sign Ricky Davis, Alonzo Mourning, and Grant Hill to the veteran's minimum.  Tell Ricky at the first sign of trouble we're cutting him.

Draft Bill Walker.  Let Tony walk.  Trade BBD for a future draft pick.

Of course, none of that is within the realm of possibility, but that's about the best team we could put on the floor.

Perk/Foster/Mourning
KG/Jamison/Powe/Scal
Pierce/Hill/Walker
Ray/Ricky
Rondo/House/Pruitt

In all seriousness, though, I wouldn't mind bringing in Mourning and Hill (should he opt out of his deal, which I find doubtful).  If we can sign Posey and somehow still keep our MLE, Foster is a guy to target should he opt out.

I like the idea of signing Mourning.  I would like to keep Posey and House.  I think that these signing would be a reasonable posibility.  Moving up in the draft would be nice too.

please explain MLE to me ........ as an old Celtic fan, i haven't kept up with all the salary cap/free agent rules in the league.

Seems to me that Posey is worth whatever it takes to keep him. Great offensive punch + excellent defense + team player who hustles + good chemistry guy  ............... and I wouldn't put House too far behind Posey in terms of value to the team.

chemistry, chemistry, chemistry !!!!!

Resign Posey at any cost....... sign Delonte ( I think he'd be perfect with this team for his hustle) to replace Cassell......... resign House..... Sign Jeff Foster or Pollard to replace PJ....... let TA go and get a 2/3 who can defend in the draft

  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
No thanks to O'Bryant.  He's soft, doesn't excel at any one thing, and has attitude problems.  I'd much rather get a Diop and Foster combination to give us some tough defense off the bench with limited scoring.

Roy, your scenario is definitely a dream one.  Very ambitious.  My free agency dream scenario involves Deng, Iverson, Baron Davis, Brand, and Arenas opting out of their contracts to fill out the C's bench for the combined MLE.
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

Resign Posey & House, draft well and add a quality veteran big man... Don't think Jamison is feasible, wouldn't he command over $10+ million per year? Foster is doable. Mourning? Be a great fit, but what's his health like?
Now, on to 18...

lol that is quite the dream off-season. I certainly wouldn't complain about anything that would happen under your vision, except maybe losing TA.

But I wouldn't be so sure that Grant Hill won't opt out. He went to Phoenix to win a ring, and that's clearly not going to happen there and he does have a great relationship with Doc, I believe. He also had the Celtics on his Top-3 BEFORE the KG trade went through. Danny wanted him, and he liked Boston and now that we're the reigning NBA champs, he might want to jump aboard.

Anyway, my ideal offseason still involves drafting Bill Walker/Jason Thompson/JJ Hickson/Gary Forbes then signing one of Duhon or Diop with the MLE, then Mourning/Mutombo and Grant Hill with the bi-annual which I believe we have this year, then the vet's minimum is like  what 1.5 million? something close to that?

Posey picks up option(we give him a raise the year after)
Diop for 4.5-5M of the MLE
Delonte or House signs for the LLE

C's add a young piece in the draft like Nathan Jawai, Devon Hardin, Bill Walker, CDR or Kyle Weaver.
