In a perfect world, I'd trade him for something tangible - a pick, perhaps.

But I doubt he has value to anyone at this point. I don't like his mental makeup at all, but I suspect that he lands back in Boston for the qual offer because no one else is interested.

The value is in the package they can make with him. They can throw quite a decent combination from picks, Tony, Scal, and Baby/Powe.  I think that could be quite attractive to many teams around.

before he got hurt, TA was playing out of his skull.

he'll be heard from again, the toughest part of post injury is the mental, timing, and confidence.

if he can get his handle straight, he'd be a great Ray Ray backup plan.   he's a full on disrupter out there, makes things happen without touching the ball.

Before he was hurt the FIRST time he was explosive and a very good defender. He was a turnover machine back then as well, couldn't shoot a jumper either, but you overlooked it due to some unbelievable athleticism. Then he got hurt the first time but came back at most his previous level. Once again he started playing very good defense and was still making some amazingly athletic plays. Still turned the ball over and couldn't shoot, but seemed to have worked a bit on that part of his game. Then he goes down again. This time he came back WAY below his prior levels of athleticism. Can't make those unbelievable plays anymore, can't defend above the "pretty good" level, turns it over worse than he did before probably due to some of his lost athleticism, and has completely lost his outside shooting. Here is what we are left with:

A player who is an average defender, average athleticism, a poor dribbler, a turnover problem, a terrible outside shooter, and hasn't improved his basketball IQ since he came in the league. Still making the same dumb mistakes he did as a rookie and shaking his head with that stupid grin as he comes back down the floor because he can't figure out why.

That is precisely why he doesn't get any run anymore. He isn't good enough to beat out a 6' tall 2 guard who also struggles dribbling. He just isn't that good people. I was certain after year 2 that he was going to be very very good. Maybe if he hadn't had those injuries he would have. The fact is though that he is as good as he will ever be, and as he ages and loses even more of his athleticism he will not be heard from again. I hope if we sign him I am wrong. I don't think so though...

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
After TA's first knee surgery it took him a solid year to get back to the athleticism that got him to the nba. Next year look for him to go off if Ray or PP go down for any time at all. Especially with the double teams that KG draws and how Ray's man can't play help defense mark my words TA will return to form
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Hey look...I'm bumping an old related thread instead of starting a new one!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any Tony Allen news or heard of any interest from around the league?

During the whole Posey wait saga, I was poking around on 82 games and found something: when TA was off the court, we allowed 100.9 points for every 100 opponent possessions, and when TA was on the court that number dropped to 97.9.

So our defense alone was 3 points per 100 possessions better with Tony than without, and this was with TA noticeably hobbled.

Now that he has recovered for a full year and might be able to contribute a bit more offensively next season, I would not be upset at all if TA came back for cheap, especially if Posey doesn't return.

He is an unrestricted Free Agent, so if no other teams are interested, he could conceivably sign here for the vet minimum. If he doesn, I think he'd surprise a lot of people.

Tony Allen is unrestricted because the team did not make a qualifying offer. I'm a little surprised that he hasn't signed elsewhere.

TA is unrestricted, right? I don't remember us making a qualifying offer.

Tony Allen – He’s a restricted free agent this off-season. The Celtics’ qualifying offer is $2.74 million. The Celtics will probably let him put his name out there and entertain offers from other teams, matching any that he accepts if it’s not for too much. He’s a useful player and they’d like to keep him. However, if some team makes him an offer that equates to starter’s money, they’ll probably decline and let him walk. He’ll get some offers. The only question is how big.

First two weeks are typically about the high level free agents. It's early for a guy like Tony. Someone would have to be head over heels about him for him to be off the line already.

Unfortunately his best chance of a good opportunity was by clinging onto a GM who believed in him and was bringing him in to play an important role. So this could be a bad sign, or at least it is a bad initial sign. Be interesting to see where he lands, he could be one of the steals of this free agent class.

I think he (and Ainge) are waiting to see how the Posey and the signing of a backup point (House?) go.  I remember reading that Ainge said Tony might be back, depending on the Celtics financial situation.  I think both Tony and House are waiting to see what happens with the Posey situation before they find out what Danny is willing to sign them for.

I think Tony will be re-signed.

My understanding is that the team had until June 30 to extend a qualifying offer.  The team did not.  Therefore TA is unrestricted.

Assuming that both Giddens and Walker are here in the Fall, the only way I see the Cs signing TA is if there are no point guards available.  And they'd only go after him for insurance purposes.  And even then, TA would probably want more money or years than the Cs would want to offer.

I just don't see him playing another game with the Boston Celtics.

What I'm really surprised at is that there have not been more discussions regarding trades with Tony. I would have bet money that the Cs would have worked some kind of sign and trade.

He wouldn't be a terrible option if Posey didn't re-sign.  But if Posey comes back, I don't see how you justify the roster space.  If Posey returns you have at the 2/3 Pierce, Allen, Posey, Giddens, Walker, and arguably Pruitt (depending on how you classify him).  Given the fact that come playoff time you really only need Pierce/Allen/Posey to get by, I don't really see the point of bringing Allen back to play the 10 mpg in the regular season that Giddens could get.

If Posey walks, he might be a good option to take his place.  Still, he's 4 inches shorter than Posey and lacks an outside shot; so, I'd still imagine Ainge going outside the organization to find Posey's replacement (maybe Matt Barnes).
