I was talking to my friend yesterday beating my chest and what comes with a win like we had on thursday. Then he drops the "This was the perfect matchup for you guys." He went on to say tha NO or SA would have crused us and that Boston is boring to watch. It was not just him either becuase I heard some talk shows that had callers saying the same thing. This is a tendency of fans not to give credit to a clearly superior team and I undestand that tendency. We have all said something to that effect in the past. But what I dont understand is how insistant some fans have become in this particular series. We clearly have shown that we are the better team so far, but there is this thought among some fans that the best team is not winning the series.

My reply to my friend was that the west overrated and the 2 best teams were in the east this year. And I stated the matchups still favored us if it was NO or SA in the finals.

Has anyone else dealt with moronic statements like this?

Don't let anyone pee in your Cheerios.  One more win and they can say whatever they want.  They were the best team in the regular season and they'll have the prerequisite 16 post season wins.

Matchups have a role no doubt.  But the Celts have adapted to whatever they've been faced with.  Other teams can't.

Well, we do match up well with the Lakers, but the fact is we won 66 games, beat every team in the NBA, beat Detroit and Lebron in the playoffs, and pretty much have conquered every challenge that's been put in our way.  It's hard to objectively label this team as anything other than the clear cut best team in the NBA.

Thats what I pretty much said to him. And they can say whatever they want. But I guess mabey it's a human nature thing to down play good teams and I guess there will never be a good answer as to why it happens.

I think I have been hearing that since the beginning of time (in my case 1968) about the Celtics. Some team was always better on paper. The truth is that the NBA is competitively balanced right now. LA got hot beating up Denver, Utah, and SA while Boston had to fight their way through Atlanta (watch out for them next year), Cleveland (Lebron, nuff said), and Detriot (Always a factor).

One more win and the naysayers will have to eat crow for the summer or go find another team to diss.

They can say whatever they want.  NO was not good enough to defeat SA and SA was not good enough to defeat LA.  Moreover, we beat SA twice this season...

Your friend clearly doesn't know
a thing about basketball.
This isn't soccer or hockey where
a team can get lucky.
This is 48 minutes of hard work!
The Celtics have been their own worst
enemy all season long. PERIOD.
Please tell your friend that the next
time you see him.

We're getting the San Antonio Spurs treatment for the last decade, where everyone kept wondering how they were winning and dismissing them constantly, yet they always showed up and won Championships.

I guess that's a "defensive-minded" teams thing. Everyone keeps underestimating your team.

I can see why some might call the Celtics boring, mainly because we aren't athletic and such. Not many dunks. But, we have wonderful animated personalities, this team is not boring at all.  I myself would like to infuse the team with some guard/sf youth that can dunk on everyone, but that's another matter entirely.

I agree with this to certain extent but, the difference should be the star power on Boston which should negate most of negative comments.  It's not hard to understand a team with 3 future HOFs being the best team in the league.  Kind of common sense IMO.

The other thing is that the Celtics for the most part make the other teams look so bad, that their poor performance reflects on the Celtics and makes them boring.

The Celtics have been dealing with this kind of doubt from day 1 and every time they have answered every question.   Let people doubt.  They are just being haters.  The Celtics ARE that good.  They need to accept it.

He had no respons when  I brought that up. Thought it was knid of funny that our road record against the west is forgotten about in these types of conversations.

I guess if someone said to me that this team isn't that good (and assuming that the statement came from someone who had at least a small clue about basketball history) I would say compared to what.  To try and make a case that the Celtics are not the best team in the league this year is laughable and I wouldn't even bother with that one.  It you want to extend the question to how does this team compare to other great NBA teams, then you might have something worth debating.  I am old school and I don't think this team is as deep and as good as NBA teams were 20 years ago.  It is hard these days to find teams with 5 really good players much less 7 or 8 like the old Celtics teams had.  But that is not the question I guess.  Maybe it is because we struggled with Atl or that people just can't admit that Doc is a perfectly fine coach but the recognition has been slow to come for this team and even some of the individual players, in particular PP.  That is all going to change though in about 36 hours.
