Well, with Scolari sticking with his boys Nuno Gomes and Postiga, even when they weren't playing crap - like in the last 4 years of their careers - it'd be hard to introduce a new striker.

Just to comment a bit on this situation. I think Nuno Gomes has been excellent upfront during this tournament, doing all the little things which alot of forwards fail to do. He is constantly moving, making room for the other players and is a nuisance for the defense. He's perhaps not the best goalscorer, and I'm not saying Portugal can't replace him - But it's not going to be easy. The ideal striker for Portugal would probably be a Pauleta clone - Someone who's not too slow to play a part in the offensive build-up and someone who's not too small to make his presence felt. Gomes does not meet all the criterias, but he is indeed better than alot of the other Portuguese alternatives, eg. Postiga and Almeida..

germany v portugal - i'm not sure about this one, it's the one where i really couldn't decide. portugal for me have been the most impressive team but pre-tournament i believed germany had the best team. toss-up.

croatia v turkey - for some reason i fancy turkey in this, i think croatia raise their game against the big teams, it wouldn't surprise me at all if modric went missing and turkey stole this one.

spain v italy - with pirlo and gattusso i say italy, now that they're out i say spain. too much attacking flair for ambrosini to deal with alone.

netherlands v russia - russia. they're quick, crafty and with arshavin back very dangerous. the dutch defence will finally come under some pressure that they wont be able to deal with.

What other strikers where there to call on?

I'm not big on National team managers being responsible for introducting  young players in and developing them. There isn't enough games or enouggh practice time to make serious progress. My take has always been that players should prove themselves at club level (with their main development there) to prove to their manager they should be in the team. Especially on a team like Portugal that has good chances of winning trophies. If they prove themselves at club level then I would blame the National team manager.

Can you tell me more about Huge Almeida? I haven't seen too much of him. He didn't impress me while he was at Porto and he never stood out when I've watched Bremen play. The only part of his game that got my attention was his size and aerial ability.

I agree with Shots. With so powerfull attacking midfielders Gomez doesn`t need to score a lot (he can`t do that anyway) When he needs to do if "fight" with the central defenders and open spaces for the players behind him. Of course if they could have a strong body and scorer like Van Nistelroy (spelling?) it would be better.

That`s sad   :'(

Khalid Boulahrouz has left the team and returned to Holland. Yesterday his daughter was born prematurely but didn`t make it and today she died.

Update on Ribery. His injury is not as serious as it seemed. He will be back in 2-3 months. Good for him he is a class act and he has much to offer to his team and us as spectators

BTW I do watch german league but only german league. i`ve seen Gomez as i`ve seen Guitha Benzema BenArfa (few examples). I can`t say he is better than any of them. Bundesliga is the league where Gekas and Amanatidis are considered good strikers !!!

I´m german, and a Kaiserslautern fan(Amanatidis` old team), and I live in Bochum(the team Gekas made 20 goals for). I can assure you, they are not considered good strikers. Not bad, but definitly not good. Bochum had noone else on offense, so they used Gekas as their focal point in their conter tactic(like Christiansen or Hashemian before him). And there´s a reason why Amanatidis played for 4 teams in 6 years.  ;)

And we don´t play bad. In fact, in the last 2-3 years, our national team played the best ball I´ve ever seen them play. Our slump began right before the euro with our 2-2 against Belarus, and it has a lot to do with Klose´s injury. He´s just too important for us. I never saw a smarter striker than him. He also started his careeer for my team, and watching him play was almost as if I played a computer game, seriously.

I´m not the biggest Gomez fan, but he´s definitly extraordinarily talented. He was player of the year 2007, led a mediocre and very young Stuttgart team to the title and made the most goals in that season...at age 21! As maestro said, it´s a very bad timing for him (at least I hope so).

As a german, I would love to see Ronaldo against Lahm. If you think he could slow Lahm down on offense, you´re in for a surprise. Lahm has no respect whatsoever in that regard, I have no doubt he would play the way he always does. In fact, to me, Lahm is our best player, better than Ballack or Klose.

That said, I don´t think we can beat Portugal. It will all depend on Klose. If he can dig himself out of his slump, we´ll win. My biggest concerns are Schweinsteiger, whom I consider to be a subpar player(tbh, I have no idea why he´s a player on the national team. Lazy, low ball IQ, selfish, weak technic, imo. His only Strengths are his game off the ball and his funny name), and that our coach has to sit in the viewers ranks(ridiculous decision, btw. Both coaches said they didn´t do anything other than to tell the fourth official they want to do their job). Oh, and of course that Frings is injured. Rolfes is good, but not in Frings class.

I guess I´ll have to hope that we show our old "suck and win" mentality and prove Lineker right, once again.  :-\

In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

That might do it - 2-0 after 26 minutes. Portugal's midfield is clearly struggling with the size and power for Germany's midfield. Portugal aren't getting a lot going in midfield, most of their good attacks are coming off of broken German plays. It'll be very difficult for Portugal to score three goals from here.

Bosingwa and Pepe are the only two that seem able to outbattle the Germans physically. Ronaldo is having some difficulties against Germany's two large CB's and from the midfield help so far.

Be interesting to see where the game goes from here. While I write this Portugal seem to have responded well and have picked up their attacking play. Some hope there.

...shows how much I know... ::)

I love the Intensity with which we started the game. I guess the penalty for Löw lit a fire under some of our guys. They knew they had to show something, and they did. However, I´m concerned how we acted after the second goal, we became a bit lazy, once again. The goal for Portugal was not necessary. I hope they can get back on track. They just have to show the Intensity of the first 30 minutes, and we´ll win this thing.

Like the saying goes, and Gary Lineker said...in the end the Germans win ;D
Didn't expect Germany to be up by 2-1. But this is a great match sofar. Lots more intensity from both teams.  It's gonna be a close call.
