I thought it was interesting tonight that Doc did his best KC Jones impression and kept the starters for maximum minutes.  Very interesting.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
I don't have a problem with it.  We're at the stage of the year where playing your starters 40+ minutes is to be expected.  Perk deserves the minutes tonight, and I can see why Doc doesn't trust Sam.

I don't have a problem with it at all.  I just thought it was an interesting analogy.  Though, if you recall, over the long-run, some people think Jones' substitutions strategies might have cut a year or two off of the reign of the '80s Celtics since he wore them out.

But for this team, in this series, and with Perkins playing this way. . seems reasonable to me.

I don't have a problem with it. The stars on this team are old anyway. If they don't win NOW then they never will.

There are now 4 minutes left.  I am not at the game but friends at the game say the starters look pretty exhausted.  But it is too late for subs.  Hopefully the C's can finish it off strong and take the lead!

I blamed it on Jimmy Rodgers, Len Bias, and trading Ainge for two bums.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
put yourself in KC's shoes - you look down the bench and see Greg Kite and Fred Roberts sitting there...

Hey! Don't knock Greg Kite! He got player of the game in Game 3 of the 1987 NBA Finals without scoring a point!!!!!!

no, i don't. The way Detroit was playing, any bench player except posey would have been fresh meat.

sometimes the starters have to earn every penny of that pay check, and, though it was far more intersting than it should have been, they did tonight.

1 for for the finals!

Len Bias, Walton's body giving out a final time, Bird's body giving out all had more to do with it than KC Jones.

Most of our guys were lucky enough to play career low minutes in the regular season, so while that shouldn't completely cover them from being tired in the playoffs, they shouldn't have to worry about playing 40 minutes.

remember that game well...he pulled down a bunch of rebounds, made life miserable for kareem, and even blocked the skyhook.  plus, the dude had the deepest voice you've ever heard...

My point was just that, after the fact, KC Jones got a reputation for not playing his bench and that is something people remember about him.  For example, here is a blog post on Suns/Spurs that cites Gregg Poppovich as doing a KC Jones impression since he played his starters so many minutes.  http://lexnihilnovi.blogspot.com/2008/04/popovich-goes-kc-jones-on-suns.html

Doc Rivers did not play his bench last night, ergo the topic.  It has nothing to do with the wisdom of the decision, etc (and obviously the situations are not exactly analogous and the Jones thing covered a whole season), etc.
