I'm incredibly scared that it will.  Damon Jones (yes I actually think he did a pretty good job on nba fastbreak) said it perfectly I think.

He was asked about what the Pistons do for game 4 and he said that he thinks that Flip Saunders should sit his team down tomorrow and show them the video of the 4th quarter cause they really disrupted the Celtics offense.

Problem (for them) is, there's no way Detroit can sustain that type of defense for 48 minutes ... maybe 24, but not for a whole game ... they just don't have the legs for it. For that reason, I'm not too worried. If the Celtics play their best ball, Detroit doesn't stand a chance ... unfortunately, the C's don't always play that way, so it's on them and how badly they want it.

My suggestion: take a deep breath and enjoy the win.

I don't have much love for Doc, but he's talented enough to make the adjustments necessary to break a simple trap, especially when given 48 hours to prepare.  It's not going to be a major problem.

I was about to start a thread about this, but this thread is a good enough one to make my point in. Clearly, the Pistons' trap succeeded in disrupting the flow of our offense. The problem is for Detroit, traps like the one the Pistons used should be fairly easy for an NBA coach to adjust to in 48 hours. After seeing how effective the defense was, the first thought that crept into my mind was thank you Flip for showing us your hand in a blowout game. I'd rather Doc be introduced to this trap in a 20-point game and have our lead slip a little, then have Flip break out the trap in a close game later in the series. Maybe if Flip had known that the trap was going to work so well then he would have saved it, but now it's pretty much useless because the Cs will have time to adjust to it and prepare for it. I wouldn't be suprised if we don't even see this trap at all in game 4, because Flip must know that the Cs will prep for it.

It also helped the Pistons that the referees refused to call a foul on them throughout the fourth quarter.

Aside from that, the Pistons made a decent run, but at no point was I scared that the lead wasn't safe. They weathered the storm and still got a few good looks against the trap. My guess is, down 2-1, Flip isn't going to get risky and use the trap all game.

Without a doubt Roy, that is the probably the nicest thing you have ever said about Doc. So do you really think he is talented?  Wow!! You've come a long way my friend if you are actually admitting to the fact that Doc has talent doing something!!

****! My apologies!! When I saw you said Doc and talented in the same sentence I thought I was dreaming!!

Sorry. That struck me funny!

Good point.  Although the Pistons did step up the defensive intensity it the 4th, they were given way too much rein by the refs.  I assume the Refs "let them" do this because it was a blowout, and i hope that in a tighter contested game they will not let the Pistons get away with that much hacking and chopping and hand-checking.

Nah, I'm not worried cause the ref weren't blowing the whistle on a lot of their hacking when they were trapping..... that would change if it was done the entire game and besides, once we go over it tomorrow, we'll be scoring easy buckets on them.........

All they have to do is pass out of the trap and cut to the basket..... tonight they were just passing out of the trap and standing there...... all you got to do is cut after the pass and the trap fails due to an easy bucket..... just get 2 easy buckets in a row and Detroit won't be trapping anymore..... Problem solved

Shush, Nick, before I have to retract my words. ;)  I'm riding a wave of optimism.  No complaints about Doc, Ray, the mini-breakdown in the fourth, Rondo's carelessness with the ball, or anything of the like.  I'm all sunshine and lollipops tonight.

He said "talented enough" as in most High School coaches are talented enough to break a trap press the second time around. :)

Exactly, CC.  If Doc needs pointers, he can google "break basketball zone press", and that should get him through.

The Celtics took all the Pistons had, all the Refs bad calls, and came up with a big road win. When the celtics realize how much better they are than the pistons the series will be over.

While it's shocking, as a coach, to see a professional team have that much trouble with a simple zone trap, the trap itself isn't anything more than a gadget defense.

You attack it from the middle of the floor with great ball movement, and once you break the first wave you attack the rim. Simple.
