I lost count how many times Stockton misread stats... it got embarrassing.  What I don't get is why no one in the production booth ever makes him correct himself?

The national broadcast teams are usually a bit of a joke, unless they have some Marc Jackson/Reggie Miller/Steve Kerr/John Barry guys in the booth who've been in the league recently and actually keep tabs on the league. M

My favorite example of national broadcaster's cluelessness is Tim McCarver's reaction in the playoffs "I don't understand why they're booing Kevin Youkilis?"

My Stockton's-best-days-are-behind-him moment came in the firt half.

Stockton and Fratello were riffing about the Cavs' colors.  Fratello said that gold and wine were not the colors when he was coaching, and he went on to describe their colors at the time.  Then Stockton takes note that Fratello did indeed coach the Cavs, then he mentions (paraphrasing, of course):

"Bill Fitch coached the Cavs when their colors were gold and wine.  And Fitch once coached the Celtics.  So, there's a similarity there between you too."  Fratello responded with dead silence.  Nice moment.

Time to consider full time golf, tennis and shuffle-board, Dicky baby - not announcing them, playing them.  Shoo.

Yeh, that was a pretty random association.  2-degrees of Kevin Bacon Celtics style for Fratello? I was expecting him to go on a bit about Fitch winning a title in Boston or something...anything really

Yup

I'm not sure this is a Stockton moment but he should have addressed it.

Stockton called the Celtics first basket of the second half a Ray Allen three pointer. The score on the air registered 46-46.

When next the Celtics scored with a Rondo layin the score went to 48-46, Celtics.

After Delonte scored the next basket, Stockton said that the Cavs had taken back the lead and the television showed a score of 48-47, Cavs.

Then after a trip back and forth KG hit a jumper and Stockton told us the Celtics had retaken the lead. Score on television, 49-48, Celtics.

Delonte then got fouled and made the first and the score on the television said 50-49, Celtics.

When Wallace later scored the score then went to 51-49, Cavs.

Do you think he could have addressed the fact that Ray Allen's first shot was indeed a two-pointer and not a three?!?!

There was no mention of why TNT had the score all messed up. No mention of whether there was a question as to whether Ray's shot was or was not a three. No replay. Nothing.

Just a score that left Celtics fans completely baffled for the first 6 minutes of the second half. That's all. No big deal. So your television audience doesn't have a clue as to what the real score of the game is for say half a quarter. So what, right? We could always go to ESPN.com and check the score, right?!

Nick, I noticed that too.  There's just so many things that seem worthy of mention that get completely glossed over.  Granted, the likes of us who go over every thing with a fine tooth comb, are probably in the 1% area of total viewers.  But still, it's either they don't notice this stuff, or they just don't think it's worthy of mention (or some combo of the two).  It's a little insulting.

My favorite Stocktonism of all time occured right befoe Game 4 of the 1984 NBA Finals. Game 2 had gone ito OT and then everyone flew out to LA(remember no special charters back then) where the Celtics preceeded to get bounced big time.

So as I said it's now just before the epic Game 4 and the camera goes to Stockton and Heinsoh for a couple of quick comments.Stockton turns to Heinsohn and says something like, and I'm paraphrasing here:

"Tommy, apparently the long flight out here for the Celtics to play the Lakers certainly seemed to take something out of the Celtics. It looked like they had no fight in them in game 3."

Tommy then proceeds to pause, give Stockton a look saying "Are you some sort of idiot?" And says something to the effect of:

"Well, the Lakers had to fly to LA too, Dick. I just think the emotion of beng home made the Lakers come out fast and hard and play their game. Showtime."

So of course later on he Celtics make Dick Stocktonlook like even more of a Bozo, when McHale and the Celtics show just how much fight was left in them by clotheslining Rambis and the LA/Celtic rivalry became more frenzied than it ever was before.

It was about 5 seconds of television, but it was awesome.

Kevin Bacon was in "A Few Good Men" which starred Jack Nicholson...Jack Nicholson had a seat not far from Bill Fitch when he coached the Celtics.  :)

Yeah, I noticed that too - luckily I watched Ray as he took the shot and thought he might've toed the line, which made me notice the ref making the "2 pts" sign to the bench - I think he had to do it more than once as it was initially announced as a 3.  But if I hadn't caught that I would've not known what was going on either - half the blame goes to the announcers and the other half to whoever it was in the truck who had the job of keeping the score accurately.

I liked:

"And the Celtics are going to take a full timeout, we'll be right back.... oh wait, it's been changed to a 20-second timeout."

No Dick, it wasn't changed. You just never caught on.

I agree with CoachBo, he's finished.
