Stockton is solidifying his status as the Joe Morgan of Basketball broadcasting

STRONGLY disagree...miller and morgan are an outstanding team on sunday night baseball for espn.

there is NO comparison whatsoever.

TP, Andy.  Meant to address this earlier.  I still fail to understand the level of Morgan-hating that goes on out there, although my understanding is that it's related to his disdain for sabermetrics.  Love that team with Miller for Sunday nights.

Yeh, I've never had a big problem with Morgan as a color man either.  And Miller is about the best.

It's astonishing how much better Mike Gorman is than most national broadcasters. I've lived all over this country, in dozens of media markets and he is definitely one of the best in the business, regardless of the size of the audience. We are so lucky to have him.

I'm glad we get one more chance to hear him, though that's the only reason I'm glad this series has gone to (at least) six games.

Call me sentimental (or worse) I have always liked Dick Stockton.  He was the first Red Sox play-by-play guy I really remember and that solidified it for me.  I feel the same way about Chicago White Sox homer Ken Harelson who was Stockton's color guy for the Sox.  Never understood how he became such a Chi-Sox homer.  No love for Morgan, I think he drones and I never feel as if I learn anything from him when he speaks.

TP Blackbird. Gorman is indeed the consummate professional announcer.  Did anyone get to hear him do color on the radio the other day?
Yup

I've been watching some of last night's game on TiVo over my lunch break, and realized that knowing the outcome, I was having nearly as much fun laughing at the clueless Dick Stockton as watching the Celtics win.  What's your favorite of the dozens of mistakes he made?

I think mine is when Big Baby dove on a loose ball in the paint, and made a Time-Out gesture while the backboard mic picked up him yelling "Time out!" Stockton, immediately after the whistle blew and the ref pointed to our bench to indicate the timeout: "The Celtics didn't call timeout, it should be a jump ball!  ...looks like the refs are saying there was a 20 second timeout."

That was mine, too. I have been hating on Stockton since the '80s and it's clear he's learned nothing about the game of basketball over the years. All he does is regurgitate irrelevant stats.

I did enjoy hearing Mike Adams on the pre-game in the Atlanta series saying, "Is Dick Stockton in the building? Is there somebody here with orange hair?"

I also think Gorman gained a lot more cred once he stopped coloring his hair!!  (Are you reading this Clyde?  Wake, I am talking to you man!!! --- ahh, nevermind)

dont forget that every non-fastball thats ever been hit hard has been a change up.

I swear, ill see a hanging 12-6 curve get hammered and morgan's going "weeeellllll...heeee....left....the...change...up....up...in...the...zone."

My Stockton's-best-days-are-behind-him moment came in the firt half.

Stockton and Fratello were riffing about the Cavs' colors.  Fratello said that gold and wine were not the colors when he was coaching, and he went on to describe their colors at the time.  Then Stockton takes note that Fratello did indeed coach the Cavs, then he mentions (paraphrasing, of course):

"Bill Fitch coached the Cavs when their colors were gold and wine.  And Fitch once coached the Celtics.  So, there's a similarity there between you too."  Fratello responded with dead silence.  Nice moment.

Time to consider full time golf, tennis and shuffle-board, Dicky baby - not announcing them, playing them.  Shoo.

In regards to the Miller/Morgan crew, I find Miller to be as good as it gets for baseball, the guy has an amazing voice and a genuine sense of enthusiasm, Morgan on the other hand, I find to be an insult to everyone's intelligence.

Breen and Gorman are the two best play by play guys working the NBA today. Stockton is always an unwelcome sight, and Kevin "No regard for human life" Harlan ain't too great either. "No regard for human life?" Really? Has it come to that level nowadays? Must we pander to Lebron, and his fans that much?

I agree that Stockton is clueless.  He doesn't do his homework.

He actually said that was the connection between the two. He said like it was the only connection, um Dick did you forget that D. West was on the Celtics last year you moron. There where many other moments last night also, but this and the way he said the Celtics where fighting to stay alive. He just talked about them like they are the under dog or as if the Cavs where playing Memphis or the T=Wolves.

He made it sound like the Cavs had the C's where they wanted them even though the C's dominated the second half.

I'm convinced he would have said that the Cavs were hanging around and had the Celtics right where they wanted them if they had been down 45 with 6 seconds left.  ::)

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i really liked dick stockton when he was paired up with tommy back in the '80's...but sadly, he hasn't kept up with today's nba players, transactions, player tendencies, etc. and he's extremely lost.

after having the nba league pass for years (we live in florida) i can say without a doubt (and in an unbiased opinion) that mike gorman is indeed the best play-by-play guy out there.  he deserves every accolade he gets.

My favorite moment was when I switch to Sean Grande...Stockton should call it a career and put us out of our misery....he is un-listenable..
