I've always said that Phil Jackson is overrated because of the stars that he has coached.  I guess the same can go for this award, no one had more to work with this year than Doc.  Dont' get me wrong I think he did a great job, but I don't think he was COY.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

He deserves it.  Several other deserving coaches (Doc included) but I'm not mad at the choice.

I'm guessing Doc won't be getting any votes for Playoff Coach of the Year.  :P

Scott wasn't a bad choice, although, as always, I get the feeling that Coach of the Year isn't a reflection of the game's best coaches.  I don't think either of the last two coaches to win (Scott and Sam Mitchell) is all that special a coach.

While the players obviously had much to do with the season's success, being orchestrator of the greatest single-season turnaround in NBA history certainly is resume' enough to get the award ... should have been Doc, (and I'm obviously biased). That said, Byron is indeed a deserving selection, and it's hard to argue with decision ... objectively, that is.

I probably would have voted for Adelman.  That team really gelled together after Yao went down, and he presided over that win streak.  There were a lot of difficult personalities on that team, and a jumbled roster, and he got everybody playing together.

I just find it interesting that many good coaches get overlooked year after year, I guess because people expect them to do well, so when they do, it's not anything special.  Jerry Sloan is the coach most often mentioned along these lines; he's probably a top-5 coach in the NBA, did a terrific job this year (bringing Kirilenko back into the fold, developing Ronnie Brewer, blending Korver in seemlessly, getting big contributions from C.J. Miles, etc.), and yet you don't hear his name mentioned.

Scott isn't a terrible choice, by any means.  I just don't think that he's the best coach in the NBA.

I never looked at from that prospective..but you are right, there are some other decent coaches, who had to deal with more difficulties on their teams, but kept their teams in the hunt or at the top of the heat.

My vote would have to go to Nate McMillan. He lost what most experts believe to be the next great, most dominant center in the league before he even played a game and still pulled out a .500 record in the Western Conference. With the exception of Joel Pryzbilla, James Jones and Steve Blake every other player in their top 10 contributing players is 25 and younger with none of their top 4 scorers(Roy, Aldridge, Webster, and Outlaw) who account for 61 points per game older than 23.

I just think for a team that young to have a .500 record in the much stronger Western Conference(26-26) is a remarkable achievement in today's NBA and reflects just how good a coach McMillan is and can be in the future. I know he's just a .500 coach career wise but when he has even the slightest bit of talent he usually does a pretty good job with it. Heck and when he only has mediocre talent he does okay. His best coaching year in Seattle he went 52-30 with Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis and pretty much a bunch of scrubs.

If it were my choice I'd give it to Pop. 56 wins in that conference shouldn't be ignored, he dealt with major injuries all season long, added new (and old) pieces to the mix, endured some about to retire ones, and he once has the Spurs playing at their expected summertime level. I don't know when the COY award became the top 3 turnaround in wins award but this one's even more stupid than MIP, the feel good story of the year, so what?

Scott and Mitchell won the award because they had young teams raising their levels of play and kids turning into solid NBA players with the right STAFF to compliment it. The Rapts got the 1st pick overall and TJ Ford and Calderon and Tony Parker that offseason, Hornets got Peja and Mo Pete. The Spurs just got a year older.

Scott did have a great year but I'd give him the award if he can do it for two years in a row. Pop does it every year, this one should have to be earned and seasoned just like the MVP.
