Pat Riley just stepped down at a live pc on NBA.TV,and long time assistant Erik Spoelstra will be new head coach.Erik has been a scout, head of video, head scout, many diff.jobs for the Heat over the yrs.Erik looks like a 20yr.old kid,but they are guaranteeing they will never have a season like this past one.P.Riley will remain President of operation, says this season the luxury tax will be their biggest problem.

Thanks for the info, Jay ... TP. I think he makes a better coach than GM, but who knows?

Really?  I think he did a heck of a job as GM.  They fell apart when he tried to do both at once.

Remember, he was the one who turned them from a lottery team into a very good playoff team in one year, and then a championship team the next year.  He even was able to turn Shaq (who had become dead weight...no pun intended) into a very nice player in Marion.

So how many games over .500 do the Heat have to get to before this Eric guy decides he needs to spend more time with his family?

When i saw this kid sitting next to P.Riley,i thought it was Rileys grandson or something at first.I never saw him before today. As you say, just how long you think he will last?I would have thought, someone already beside him coaching would be the next guy in line,or someone with some experience in the NBA at the coaching level.

Well, I was more insinuating that Riley himself would barge back in once the team is contending. That's the way he rolls. When the going gets tough, step down, go scout, get an operation mid season, or whatever. Then when things start looking up again make your comeback. Though, he did help deliver a championship, so.....

Well that was expected

Spolstra has been the next head coach in waiting ever since SVG left. He'll likely be very good. Be interesting to see if the rest of the staff sticks around, McAdoo and Aksins are meant to be top notch coaches with big aspirations also. They probably will, Riley seems to create a nice coaching family there.

Good news for Miami

The game had passed Riley by. His coaching was abysmal this season and below par the previous two seasons until his veterans stepped in and played inspired basketball for 4 weeks. Outside of those four weeks it was a series of mistakes.

I think this is the last we see of Pat Riley coaching. He'll remain President and part owner.

Very exciting summer ahead for Miami. They got a lot of bounce back material in their favour.

I din't say he wasn't a good GM, I said I felt he was a better coach than a GM.

I can't let this moment pass without asking. When is someone going to sit Pat Riley down and discuss his hairstyle options?
