To put this in the most positive terms. Instead of Giannis, we now have Paul George and 4 1sts

I would much rather have Giannis

Brad did not forget how to do his job in 2 months. He has been very very good.

I also do not buy that JB did not ask to be moved. I think that is BS. I think Brad told him we are not extending you this summer and JB wanted out.

Brad I think gave a very poor offer for Giannis thinking he could still move Brown for what he expected he was worth. Problem is JB was not worth close to that. Honestly no one wanted him on the contract.

Now we are where we are. Could be very good next year with some additions if they can be made.

Don't mind getting PG and the picks. But just those without another player or more assests seems hollow.

Yeah I don't buy that JB didn't demand a trade.

He's always throwing a tirade on Twitch how he's the best player and should be a leading team. Throwing shades at Tatum. Liking a random comment on IG dismissing the Celtics and all.

I'll have to learn to get used to PG. Shoot if he's healthy we'll still be good. But now the focal point runs through JT only, finally, after 9 years

There is speculation around the league that the Celtics' trade sending Jaylen Brown to the 76ers was made "under duress," per @WindhorstESPN 😳

"This was not a trade that you would make in a clinical setting... You wouldn't do this trade under these circumstances if everything was equal, that something wasn't equal."

For full clarity, here are the various options for the 2028 swap/pick the Celtics got in the trade with the Sixers:

1. If LAC is 1-16 AND PHI is 1-8, then BOS gets the best of LAC/PHI/[lesser of BOS (top-1 protected)/SAS]

2. If LAC is 1-16 and PHI is 9-30, then BOS gets the best of LAC/[lesser of BOS (top-1 protected)/SAS]

3. If LAC is 17-30 and PHI is 1-8, then BOS gets the best of PHI/lesser of BOS (top-1 protected)/SAS]

4. If LAC is 17-30 and PHI is 9-30, then BOS keeps lesser of BOS (top-1 protected)/SAS and gets LAC's pick outright, no swap with PHI at all

Scenario 4 is the only one where the Celtics get an extra pick. In all other scenarios they get the best of LAC or PHI, and swap the worst of their own pick or SAS.

So, Boston either comes away with a decent pick (somewhere from 1-16) through a swap, or they pick up an extra pick. Basically, root against the Clippers, Sixers and Spurs in 2028 if you are a Celtics fan.

Biggest winner of this trade? John Henry, now the second-most hated owner in Boston.

Ha! TP.

As good as the Boston sports scene was over the last couple of decades, it's gotten pretty bad pretty quickly. The Red Sox are run like a midmarket team, the Bruins are meh, and the Celtics now seem content with ?good regular season and early playoff exit.?

Can't wait for the Patriots.

There is apparently another wrinkle to that swap/pick, and that is if the Sixers acquire an additional first before the 2029 draft, the Celtics get the best of Sixers/Clipper/new pick as part of the swap.  So if they make some trade and that pick hits the lottery, it belongs to Boston.

What was C's record this year when JB didn't play?

9-2, although at least early in the season they tended to rest him strategically, so games against Washington, Indiana, Sacramento were 3 of the 5 before the trade deadline (Toronto in December and that weird Houston game in Feb the day before the trade deadline were the other two.  Were the Celtics holding JB out that night in case?)

I was out in the afternoon and didn't find out about the trade till I got home a few mins ago. My thoughts:

There's got to be more to this than what's being reported. On its own merits it would appear to be a lopsided trade, trading an All-NBA, All-Star, two way wing who was 2024 Finals MVP and was 6th in MVP voting this season for a guy who by popular consensus had one of the worst contracts in the NBA. And Philly only had to give up two firsts and two seconds to get rid of his contract.

The only way this would make sense is if it is one part of a bigger set of moves that lead to us being a net better team overall. Then you might be able to accept why Stevens appeared to give up a lot for not very much in return.

Speculating on what we don't know, either of these things could be true, which would be a way of defending (clutching at straws) this decision:

a) there has been a relationship breakdown, either between Jaylen and the organization, or Jaylen and Tatum, that they deemed to be beyond repair, and that could affect the harmony of the locker room. Why this happened after 10 years, who knows. But they do happen. You'd have to think that Jaylen probably knew this was coming, he wouldn't have been blindsided by it.

b) it's about the money. Jaylen is eligible for an extension this year, it would have been at minimum a 2 year $140m extension ($70m AAV) starting in 2029-30, or up to a five year extension at $325m ($65m AAV) if he had reached free agency. It's possible that Brad was thinking ahead and didn't think Jaylen was worth paying that extension for so he moved him now, for a guy who, while being overpaid for his production, will come off the books end of next season.

In any case, I have a feeling that while the Jaylen haters wanted him shipped out, this wasn't what they had in mind

@Celtics2021 - After this trade, and with the Robinson signing, can we still use the TPE?

Is it possible that Stevens will use the TPE to take on Murphy for the picks he just got?

How does the cap work for this? Is there a certain order?

Do any cap people know the answer to this? I think we would go over teh 1st apron, but is this possible?

If we end up with George, Murphy, and Robinson this off-season, we would be a better team.

Currently no.  We're about $2 million below the tax line.  Even if we spent up to our first apron cap, we'd only be able to use around $10 million of the MLE.

Right. Here's the spotrac of our cap - excluding JB we have $123.4m in active salaries, and incoming salaries of $74.1m, for a total of $197.5m. The tax line is $200m, the first apron is $209m, the second apron $221.m. So we are $2.5m under the tax line now.

(click to anlarge)

With all the extensions due next year we will almost certainly be over in, meaning the only chance to reset it is really being under it this year, which means we only have $2.5m to spend of that MLE, or we can only absorb the same amount into the $27m Simons TPE. If the first apron is the threshold they are working with then we could spend $10-12m of it. If they're willing to go just under the 2nd apron with a non-contending team, then they could spend up to $23m, either absorb that salary into our TPE or use a combination of that and the MLE.

And technically, by making the team worse, Brad is probably more likely to stay below the tax line to reset the repeater rate this season, since it will be nearly impossible to do so next season. So unless he gets a player that really makes us a serious contender, I'm guessing the tax line is the threshold.

And, if we're the worst of those teams, we get nothing in the first three scenarios.

Well done, Brad.
