Mitchell Robinson will go into the Celtics mid-level exception.

They are now hard capped to the first apron.

It can't be structured as a sign and trade since he received an option in the third year.

Can someone please explain this for dumb people

Sure.  The rule around signing someone with the non-taxpayer MLE (or with a sign-and-trade, or with cap space) is that if you do so you are capped at the first apron.  For the Celtics this does not matter much, because they were always going to be capped at the first apron if they made any addition, and they are trying to stay below the tax.

As to the sign-and-trade component, S&T deals must be for a minimum of three years, excluding options.  So since Mitchell Robinson has a player option and the deal would only be two years without it, the Knicks and Celtics are not going to work out a sign-and-trade.  This also is relatively academic.  The Celtics do not need to use a sign-and-trade to sign him, and the Knicks are at the second apron level and would this be unable to utilize a TPE from a sign-and-trade.

This is a capologist telling us all the things that are true because of this deal by CBA rules, but we did not really need to know, because they were also true based on common sense.

Why does Boston need to trade JB now?

Doesn't really make sense to.

I don't know what this means for the Brown situation, but the Mitch signing does a lot for our trade options if we do intend on trading him. Before, it was almost a requirement that we get back a center. Now, that doesn't really matter at all.

I get that Mitch has his issues, but there are a lot of great big men on top teams out there right now. If we can't acquire one of them, then it's great to at least have somebody who can defend them. We have enough talent throughout the rest of our roster to win games offensively (and defensively for their positions).

I like it a lot, he was a real big part of the Knicks Run.  I also like that this signals that we are keeping JB!!! That makes me very happy.

M Robinson was their only reliable bench player in that playoff run. I am looking at the Knicks bench without him and thinking that is one of the worst benches in the league.

G: Alvarado
G: McBride, J Clarkson
F: L Shamet, Diawara, Dadiet
F: Sochan
C: (none)

Knicks got a lot of work to do if they want a chance at retaining that title. They are not winning another one with a bench that bad.

I really hate terrible FT shooters. Cant use their other skills at the end of games. But, his other skills are no doubt a need so it?s a plus signing.  Only 28.

Get yourself up to 60% man.

And Jaylen Brown is only 29!

Celtics now 3.5 above the tax, but cutting the non-guaranteed Delano Banto would get them to within 700K with 14 roster spots filled. My guess is they'd be fine going into the season above the tax as long as they are close enough to duck under by the deadline.

Of course all this can change with the Jaylen stuff, but with the center position now solidified I think they'd have a real shot if they just keep Jaylen. We'll have to see what happens there.

They could still work out potential extensions with any/all of Brown, Pritchard, Queta or Walsh this summer.

I get the impression that if they move Jaylen it will be for a couple of younger players on good contracts so I could see them incuding Walsh and/or someone else as part of a package.

I still haven't wrapped my head around modern salaries, but Robinson is a great get as a defense + offensive rebounding role player. Arguably the best offensive rebounder in the league, wins you a couple extra possession basically every night versus an average center. Tatum slots back in at PF.

Play defense, win extra possessions, let Tatum / White / Pritchard + whoever comes back for Brown take most of the scoring load. Hauser, Robinson, Queta, Garza, Walsh hopefully all high efficiency guys. See what Hugo and Baylor can give you. I'll take it.

With the Jaylen stuff, Brad still needs to heal this relationship.

But let's say Jaylen is still discontent and wants a trade. And now that we have Mitchell, there's no need for Jalen Duren. So, possibility of getting Trey Murphy and picks for Jaylen directly with New Orleans?

Robinson has missed 40% of his career games due to injuries.

Im not even mad at Brad for the signing, im just mad that this was somehow our best option to obtain a big.

Now with this signing and Conley it feels like the Cs have 14 on the roster.  Banton is for sure going to be waived to get under the tax, but then that brings us down to 14 and I do not think we will replace that spot until much later in the year.  So this is likely the roster unless we trade someone (Hauser, Brown, etc.).  This does make it a bit tougher to do a Brown trade where we get back a few players I imagine just because of the roster crunch although I am sure we can trade Baylor or Walsh if we had to.

He wasn't my favorite option, but when he's healthy and engaged he can be disruptive.  The price is fine, and it doesn't ever hurt to have another guy with a ring in the room,

Or Markkanen and a boatload of picks from Utah?

With respect to Garza, it will be nice to have a second-string big who can protect the interior.  A guy like Scheierman who generates a lot of deflections is a lot more effective defensively if he has a center fielder behind him who can cover for some of his more ill-advised gambles.

Health is a concern but I like the pickup.  Also protects us against the possibility that we can't/won't pay Queta.
