  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Because Brad didn't make the decision to pull the trigger last summer when it was obvious he should have.  The team should have done a mini-reset last summer when Tatum was going to miss most (or all of the year).  The team traded Jrue, salary dumped Porzingis, and simply didn't go far enough and move both White and Brown.

Yeah, in retrospect, this is probably correct. If Brad had succeeded in trading Brown for Giannis, then you could argue that the season was all worth it in the end.

But now we are talking about trading Brown for younger players and picks. That easily could have been done last year and our pick would have been much better.

And, to make things worse, based on reported value, teams aren't actually buying the fact that Brown elevated to a new level and led his team to the 2nd best record in the East. His value just seems the same as it's always been.

Do you think teams are scared off because of his social media statements?

Scared, no? But they don't help especially when the advanced metrics all support that Boston is better when Brown isn't in the game.  It was obviously ridiculous that someone would put him as the 7th best player, but the idea that Brown isn't as good as his straight stats suggest is pretty accurate and that is always going to make him harder to trade.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

The most remarkable about this situation I find the lack of supposed interest. There doesn't seem to be much of a market for Jaylen Brown. Yes, it's a big contract and he's almost 30, but come on.

Maybe front offices don't value Brown much as having big actual impact or ability to lead a team? Do the advanced stats or hidden analysis influence how Brown is being perceived? Is Brown viewed as a toxic character or is his playing style deemed hard to incorporate in an existing team culture?

Many Celtics' fans would say that Brown is at least a top 20 player and worthy All NBA guy.

But I'd imagine the following twenty players would create more buzz when known to be available or shopped for a trade:

Antetokounmpo, Jokic, SGA, Wembanyama, Doncic, Edwards, Brunson, Tatum, Cunningham, Towns, Maxey, Barnes, Advija, Mitchell, A.Thompson, Haliburton, J.Johnson, Banchero, Holmgren or even Adebayo.

It's all very weird. Normally you would have a lot more teams and players being discussed. I'm nervous about the outcome of all of this, I always thought it would be hard to trade Brown for another All Star level player, but the things we hear from the media are underwhelming.

Devin Booker would be a great comp for Jaylen Brown. What types of offers do you think Phoenix would get for him?

Actually, I love the Donovan Mitchell one as well. What do you think Cleveland would get offered for him?

All 3 guys around 30.

Is it any more than Jaylen Brown for either one of them?

MVP guys or near MVP guys = that first line and a half = just flat out much more valuable on-court than Jaylen = Antetokounmpo, Jokic, SGA, Wembanyama, Doncic, Edwards, Brunson, Tatum, Cunningham.

Young guys = cheaper contract + you are getting 10 plus years out of them versus 5 plus years from Jaylen. So not comparable = Amen Thompson, J.Johnson, Banchero, Holmgren

That leaves Donovan Mitchell, Haliburton & Bam. Haliburton is 26 years old. Younger than Jaylen. Not quite with the young guys. Not as old as D Mitchell, Jaylen, D Booker either. Bam about to turn 29 next month.

So I'd put Jaylen alongside D Mitchell, D Booker, Bam. Does any of those 3 guys get any better offers for them than we are getting for Jaylen? I don't think they do.
